Camping near Deer Lake guide

Overview

Travel through Newfoundland and Labrador’s scenic beauty and natural landscapes on a trip to Deer Lake. The town sits on the lake of the same name, which attracts campers who love fishing and boating. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Just 20 minutes north of Deer Lake, Gros Morne National Park brims with fjords, rugged cliffs, and waterfalls—plus, campers can pitch a tent at dispersed campsites right on hiking trails. Salmon fishing and impressive waterfalls also make Sir Richard Squires Memorial Provincial Park another popular attraction for campers. Or set up camp for the night at pet-friendly campgrounds in Barachois Pond Provincial Park for hiking trails along the beach.

Where to go

Barachois Pond Provincial Park

Situated on 3,000 hectares of beautiful landscape, Barachois Pond Provincial Park features hiking trails, beaches, and great fishing. Backcountry camping near Erin Mountain is ideal for campers who want a more rustic experience. Or set up at an on-site campsite with amenities such as restrooms and dog parks. Then, bird watch, kayak, or canoe along the pond. Winter campers can also enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing within the park.

Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park’s geology—full of dramatic cliffs and towering peaks—is 485-million years in the making. A UNESCO National Heritage Site, the park is made up of tableland hikes, the Western Brook Pond Fjord, and Cow Head’s shallow bay. Hikers won’t want to miss Gros Morne Mountain Trail, an 8-kilometre loop known for astonishing views of the coast. Gros Morne also hosts many special events throughout the year, including Trails Tales Tunes in spring and the Gros Morne Fall Festival in autumn. The park features campsites with bathrooms as well as primitive camping sites near the trails.

Sir Richard Squires Memorial Provincial Park

Popular for salmon fishing, Sir Richard Squires Memorial Scenic Provincial Park is also home to Big Falls, an 87-metre waterfall on the Humber River. Campers can also enjoy camping, birdwatching, canoeing, and hiking on forested trails and through woodlands that offer spectacular views of the river.
