Hut or Tent, your choice. We will be adding the tent platform, which is about a football field away from the Hut to Hipcamp and even more private than the Hut, but for now you get the entire property to yourself and your choice of tent or hut. Get away from it all on a secluded mature wooded hill twenty minutes from the Ococee River. You can feel how old the Appalachian mountains are here. Remote enough and private but no 4WD needed (flat terrain to parking) and enough neighbors if needed (road running through property leads to subdivision by Apalachia Lake so has traffic on it.) To the right of the road is a creek and bog, to the left we have several acres of woods to explore and relax in. You will see an occasional car on the private road that runs below the Hut but on the hill, you will have complete privacy. We have also just put in a tent platform on the Northern edge of the property which you can access either from the road or through a rough path on the hill. Please note we have not yet added a firepit or compost toilet to the tent platform so you will be needing to go to the Hut for both of those. You can get to the Hut from the Platform along the road or through the woods. It is a beautiful place to chill and hang out that we are happy to share with you.
Three of ten acres to the right of the road that runs through our property are a bog that runs along a creek with the creek joining wild remote Apalachia Lake. Enjoy hiking and exploring our seven gently sloping mature wood hills. There are also lots of well maintained dirt hillside roads for exploring or biking.
Enjoy our Baba Yaga hut with only the bare necessities but you will be flat, dry and able to enjoy the woods all to yourself.

There's also Happy Bear Cafe with hand dipped Hershey's ice cream, amazing fudge, coffee and other sweet treats to enjoy. The atmosphere !! Just wow. All 3 places have outdoor riverside dining, and a host of beers and wine. The General Store is a sweet place to pick up something unique for yourself or a gift for a friend. A list of other foods, I haven't mentioned and you can book a guided fly fishing trip while in town.
Feel like a day of tubing and/or whitewater rafting? Rolling Thunder River Company has got you covered & they're the home of the only 3 mile float. Book your trip online to assure your trip but they also take walk ins. For whitewater rafting on the Ocoee you must be 12 years of age by law. You've got the site of the '98 Olympic Course at the gorgeous White Water Center. Plenty of places to hike, picnic, grill and simply take in the view from two bridges. (One high above the water) Take a seat on a warm rock or take your lawn chair. Watch the rafters take on some huge rapids like "Humongous" during the course of "The Upper" river.
Even closer is our tiny town of Ducktown, TN. There you'll find "Rods Rockin Rolls". Some of the best egg and spring rolls I've ever had and the entire menu is fun. Outdoor dinning is available there. (8 minutes away) If you're feeling up to a good brew, there's a brewery located next door to "Rods Rockin Rolls". Visit the Burra Burra mine museum in Ducktown to learn our copper mining history.
Located on the outskirts of both Ducktown and Copperhill you will find fresh vegetable stands (during season). They both carry a small assortment of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peaches, apples, corn and melons.
Located closely to NC and GA state lines. Blue Ridge, GA home of The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and Merciers Apple Orchard with you pick berries, wines, ciders and farm tours. Murphy, NC home of Harrahs Casino for a night out of entertaining slots and black jack.
Enjoy a day trip on a open or closed train car? You'll love "The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway" A 4 hour excursion and fun for the entire family. (handicap accessible) Book your trip online to assure your trip but, they do take walk ups. (1/2 hr drive to depot) in Blue Ridge, GA. You'll ride through the gorgeous mountains to TN and travel next to the Taccoa river. Your train car host will give you a little of our history along the way. There's restrooms on board and a snack car located in the middle that you can visit en-route. Trip is 13 track miles (one hour) to Copperhill, TN for shopping and lunch break for 2 hour lay over then one hour back to depot. Lots of shopping there in Blue Ridge.
Your stay here will be located on site of Whippoorwill Horse Rescue of Tennessee. (see us on the website) You'll be sleeping in our 10x10 cottage with a cozy full size bed with fresh linens and pillows, storage inside for your things and some comforts of home.
You will share a common area with kitchen utensils, dinner ware, grilling tools, serving spoons and an extra ice chests (bring your own ice). Outdoors you'll enjoy cooking on the fire pit. With the fire pit there is fire grill for cooking things from burgers to breakfast. I also supply cast iron pan and cooking utensils. I'll have your first fires wood ready but after that you'll have to gather your own from dead fall in the woods OR if you'd rather, I sell split hardwood on site .Wash sink area uses gravity water brought in from the well (filtered) and stored in 50 gallon drum for doing your own dishes and ask that you use dish washing soap. Trash bins with lids on site for all disposal as marked. Please, don't leave food out in the open, especially over night.
Should there be a windy day and I deem a fire in pit is unsafe, I'll provide a burn barrel so you can still enjoy an open flame and not miss out on your S'mores.
On site you'll have a private shelter with compost toilet. Please be tidy and most of all clean.
I'll be on property most all days but do have to leave for feed, hay & general things for my home but, will pretty much on hand if you need something. The horses on the property are all residence of Whippoorwill Horse Rescue of Tennessee.(check out our website) As friendly as most of them all are, being in the pasture is prohibited for safety of all unless I am with you. A 900 to 1200 pound animal has a mind of it's own and If spooked a horse could kick. One of our horses is completely blind and wouldn't harm anything on purpose but, just a reminder. Please, don't feed the animals/horses anything without checking with me first. Some horses are so old they don't have teeth (Scarlet is 43) and that is a choking hazard as well as possibly getting your fingers bitten by those who do have teeth. I just want you and them safe but they truly enjoy interaction with you hoomans.
The property is 8.1 acres with plenty of shade to kick back and relax. Neighbors aren't real close but, I do wish to respect them. No Swearing aloud for anyone to hear ( the mountains have ears and it echoes) I like noise pollution on a low scale but, you will hear a truck/tractor starting up, cows, horse, dogs and chickens. This is after a small farm so if those noises bother you ... well.
Quiet time is 9:00 PM. but, I'm not telling you to go to bed, just keep it low. No parties, drugs or firearms. I do not discriminate and will do any and all I can to make you feel welcome. Don’t worry about the walk to campsite because it’s pretty easy and I’ll have a pull wagon you can use to haul you gear in. Google Maps of the area is very helpful as well as things to do and see. Bring your mountain bike, hiking shoes, hammock and swimsuit for sure. You may want to check the weather so you know what to bring with. You can look us up under the zip code 37391.
Spring, Summer and Fall are beautiful here and our little towns always have something going on during holidays and many other days. You'll find antique car shows, outdoor music and firework celebrations and parades and most all activities are free. Craft shows and chili cook offs happen on different occasions as well. I'll do my best to get these dates on the calendar. Please know that you are responsible for securing your own fishing licence but, I'll be happy to point you in the best direction for stream or lake fishing (as well as the best bait).
There's great spots for Trout and Fly fishing at Horseshoe Bend Park. You can also book a guided fly fishing tour.
Bring your flash light as solar lights aren't always dependable. Bring your camp stove if you like and I'll have a space for you to set up for cooking. This is a working farm/horse rescue so, if you see a frail horse just know they're here to mend.
There's so much to see and do nearby but at the same time you're tucked away in the peace of the mountains. You may hear an occasional car but not close to a highway. Miners Cabin:
The miners cabin is located in between Dawsonville and Dahlonega Georgia in the heart of gold country. This unexpected gem has been our family’s oasis for the past 7 years and now, we are opening it up to share with others.
Access to the cabin will be via our driveway and guests will not be allowed to drive directly to the cabin. There is a short 3 minute walk from parking access to the cabin. This walk is on an incline and those who may have difficulties walking up or down an incline or on uneven surfaces should consider this walk when planning your trip. Due to access limitations, we ask that you not bring more than two vehicles, We have additional parking at another property if needed but please let us know in advance.
The Cabin sits on a grassy meadow a stones throw from cane branch stream. In the morning and afternoon you should expect to see or hear all types of wildlife. We have a family of raccoons that come around in the summer months and will eat just 5 foot from the porch. In the winter we have several deer that access the creekbed. The wildlife is fed often by our family and has been for the past seven years. Hummingbirds, woodpeckers, whippoorwills, crows, and even goldfish call this oasis home. At night our kids love to hunt for small crawfish in the creek with a flashlight. While bears are always something to watch for, we don’t typically see them on the property.
A few miles of walking paths have been meticulously cared for and created by my father Mike. The mossy stone paths look like something out of a story book in the spring. Along the trails you will find benches and hammocks to lounge on and if you look close enough you may find some crystals that were placed for others to find from some of our many mineral digs over the years. There are two bridges that cross the stream along the paths and an old water wheel from way back that was used in the gold mining process in the creek.
Vegetation on the property includes a variety of chantrell and coral mushrooms. If Mushrooming is your thing we have a good stash of chicken of the woods and if it’s fruiting you are welcome to pick it. Mountain laurels line the creek and bloom beautiful pink blossoms in the spring and summer.
Cane creek branch is a quiet and beautiful stream. The water only gets about waist high at the deepest point making it perfect for kids or dogs to splash around in. Inside the cabin you will find a few gold pans if you would like to try your luck. We have found gold in the creek along with garnets and a few flashes of platinum. This property used to be the site for a long abandoned gold mine and an old metal water wheel still sits on the creek bank. The water wheel is locked but will still turn and at over 8 ft high it is a sight to see in itself. You will find a few small fish but nothing to shake a pole at.
The cabin itself is nothing fancy and we like to keep it that way. It is as primitive as you would expect from the title. Only one electrical outlet is currently in the cabin. There is no running water but there is a water basin for brushing your teeth and washing small items. The bathroom is behind the cabin in a separate facility. This outhouse is unlike anything you have seen and has all of the comforts of home. Sleeping arrangements include a king size bed on a solid frame and a small sofa. You are welcome to pitch a tent or hammock outside as well. In the winter the cabin gets cold, we will provide an electric heater but you should know that it may still get cold inside. The porch looks over the creek and makes a great spot for bird watching.
Amenities include a charcoal grill and a fire pit for cooking. The fire pit has several stable adirondack chairs circling it. We have a throwing board on the property however you will need to rent the throwing items from us and sign a waiver. We also have a small swing by our goldfish pond just across the creek.
Things to do near us.
Kayaking and tubing are just 7 miles down the road. You can rent a kayak from us or from the outfitters. We have 4 sit on top kayaks for adults 2 for children under 100 lbs and several whitewater kayaks are available for rent if you have prior experience. We also will guide you down the river as an additional service. See our price list. Our local outfitter Chestatee River Adventures is typically 30.00 for each kayak and 10.00 for tubing. The trip is 6 miles and can take anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on the water level. Please note that the outfitter is only open during the spring and summer. Our family will take you out no matter the time of year.
Fishing on the Chestatee, Etowah, or lake lanier are also great activities and all can be accessed with a short 10 minute drive. Lake Zwerner is a local fishing hot spot great for grabbing a kayak or canoe and spending the day on the water.
Gold Mining: Dahlonega is the gold city! Only 15 minutes away you will find Consolidated Gold Mine – Underground Gold Mine Tours. Here you can do some gold and gem mining as part of the tour. The gold museum in scenic dahlonega is close by as well.If you are looking for something more my dad offers trips and will show you the basics or can take you out for an all day dredging experience. You keep whatever you find!
Hiking: The area hikes include the start of the great Appalachian (Apple-atch-an) trail. This is amicalola state park a 25 minute drive from the property. If you are brave enough, the copper mine cave is a quick 10 minute drive and is a sight to see. There is no cost to hike in however the parking and walk in are not easily accessible. From this quick hike you will be able to see copermines falls a great class 3 + rapid that local kayakers run. We also have a short walk on the etowah river that is well maintained. The Edge of the world trail is another must see.

Andy's Trout Farm and Cabins

Andy's Trout Farm opened to the public in 1965. It was founded and developed by Andy and Hazel Cope, with some help from their family. In the late 1950's, while Andy was operating a service station in Dillard, GA, many travelers inquired about places to fish and camp. The Copes used some mountain land, which they owned in the Betty's Creek Community, to develop Betty's Creek Recreation Area! Later, they changed the name to Andy's Trout Farm and built rental cabins along the stream. They had found the ideal spot to raise rainbow trout . The cold mountain stream flowing from the mountains of North Carolina into Betty's Creek provided the water needed. It took the family several months to get a hatchery in operation for hatching, and ponds built for growing the trout. They began running the fish farm and selling trout that were caught from the catch-out ponds. They dressed the catch and even had a restaurant across the road from the fishing office! In 1968 Andy and Hazel Cope were granted the "Farm Family of the Year Awards"- in both North Carolina and Georgia!

Other than the host home there are no other homes visible. The cabin is located 5.3 miles from John C. Campbell Folk School and 7.4 miles from Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino & hotel. We are just 5.6 miles from the Historic Murphy city center. Three rivers converge to form Hiawasse lake outside of Murphy and the Nanatahala Gorge River and lake is close by.
