Description

Ever heard of Minocqua, WI? We hadn’t either. Literally an “Island City,” parts of Minocqua are only accessible by bridges over the land of lakes that surround it. Doesn't that sound awesome? Well, get even more awesome and remote than Minocqua, at nearby(albeit 4 miles is practically next door in these parts) Clear Lake Campground in Northern Highland American Legion State Forest where a handful of boat-up-only reservable campsites are awaiting your blissful solitude. Each site has tent pads roomy enough for a small haul of tents, and comes equipped with a stone fire ring, picnic table, and an open-air toilet(admit it--that sounds kind of pleasant). There is also a hand-pumped water station at the northern part of the campground, by site 642 to be exact. So bring your own food, juice, and pamperage and be prepared to hang out for a few days with limited(thrillingly so!) access to the outside world.

We camped here many years ago. This is a great area with the lakes and small towns nearby. Heavy woods with evergreen and trees. We built great outdoor fires and camped in the section for tents. People were friendly. Town of Lake Tomahawk is nearby, no stop light town. Some resturants and super meat market. A must stop. Minocqua is the other way.More developed and likely the way you came up. Widelife possible is broad, eagles, hear possible wolf /coyotes at night, bears around, we did not see them. Area can have ticks in eary summer. Mosquitoes vary with the rain fall. Park well run.
