Roughing it Vintage Style! Meet "Matilda", a 1963 Aristocrat Trailer. Perfect for solo or couples outdoor adventure.
Nestled in the heart of the majestic Columbia River Gorge, Matilda offers a private, exclusive camp spot at Flying Trout Ranch. Surrounded by forest, Matilda sits next to 2 beautiful ponds with foxglove, lupine, lilies and a lovely meadow to explore.
"Matilda" is located on a beautiful property located 45 minutes from downtown Portland, and 30 minutes from the Portland International Airport on the Washington side of the Columbia River National Scenic Area (the largest scenic area in the country!). The property owners, Renee and Jeremy, live in the main house next to "Matilda", and are experts about all of the area's best places to explore, eat and drink. The secluded location will provide all the right ingrediants to relax and soak in the beauty of the area.
Our campsite is covered for rain or shine. It offers fire pit (prohibitated during wildfire season) and access to a semi-private washroom with sink and toilet, located in the basement of the main house, just steps away from the trailer. The shared area is the laundry room for the main house, and we try to provide you with privacy during your stay, unless we're doing laundry.
"Matilda" lives next to the main house, and overlooks a park-like setting in a maple tree grove, where the neighbor's horses love to greet our guests at the fence. During your stay you will be lulled by the small waterfall that pours into the pond next to "Matilda," where Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles hunt for trout to eat. If you're a birder and wildlife watcher, you'll LOVE this place.
"Matilda" is equipped with electric for tunes and charging phones, electric heater for cold nights, original propane stove with 3 top burner and oven for cooking inside, and original ice box for cooling growlers of beer and food (ice provided). Basic cookware and place settings are provided.
"Matilda" has a comfy retro inside, with a dining table and seating, small kitchen as mentioned above, with small sink. She also has a couch to kickback on and enjoy one of the books in the free library, or peruse the maps and guide books to help you discover the Columbia Gorge. The couch pulls out into a double-sized bed, as well as the dining area that provides a 2nd double bed.
The space comes with bedding and pillows, or bring your owncomfy bedding if you need you prefer. Two outdoor adirondack chairs and a swinging chair are provided for you to sit outside, as well as a bocce ball set and croquet set.
Renee and Jeremy will greet you when you arrive and introduce you to the property and the their three friendly dogs, that love visitors. The dogs and chickens have the freedom to roam the property, so if you aren't a pet/animal person, this place probably isn't right for you.

We do not allow children due to the water safety issues.
NEW!! Outdoor shower with hot water!! Take a shower while soaking up nature!

Guests have drive-up private parking next to trailer (paved), for convenient unpacking and packing and access to the space. "Matilda" overlooks a meadow, which is available for guests to use for playing games, enjoying the firepit and scenery. Access to the main home's basement for toilet and sink use (no dishwashing). We ask that guests respect our privacy and do not access the main pond or property behind home, as well as the decks and dock (unless given permission).
Other things to note
We have six laying hens, along with three loving dogs named Cody Bear (Pomeranian), Pablo and Louie (both Boston Terriers) who are very social and love guests. The vibe at Gorge Glamping in Style!
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We spent the day in Portland and though we didn’t want to leave the city, we were super stoked to go to our hipcamp site for the night, Vintage Glamping in the Gorge. Why? Because Matilda. Matilda is the 1963 Aristocrat Trailer that was waiting for us just 40 minutes outside of the city. The drive was an easy one and a beautiful one. We had several spectacular views of Mount Hood as well as some (gorge)-ous … pun intended … views of the river below.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by our host, Jeremy, who lives in the main house with the other host, Renee. He was really friendly and gave us a quick tour of the camper, made sure the stove was good-to-go (it was) and that the heater was turned on (yay!) He also showed us where the indoor bathroom and sink were and then told us that if we needed anything to just let him know.
Matilda is cozy and quaint and after living in our 4Runner for the last several weeks, she felt like a mansion. As promised, the couch pulls out into a double-sized bed. (The hosts provide a light sleeping bag as well as two towels and a crocheted throw to go on top of the sleeping area but no sheets or pillows.) We brought our own sleeping bag into the camper and were glad for it’s 20 degree rating because we ended up having to choose between the heater or darkness (the portable heater gives off a lot of light). There’s also an additional sleeping space in the camper so you could potentially fit another person in there.
The trailer is very conveniently parked to the backdoor of the house which gives you access to a private toilet.
We made mac and cheese on the range inside the trailer and called it an early evening of books and story-telling and slept peacefully through the night. In the morning, we made some of the coffee that was left for us in the french press and then rolled on out.
We recommend this place if you enjoy smaller spaces, love all things vintage and want a site that is within close proximity to all that Portland has to offer.
WOW!! Honestly, staying here MADE our trip to Portland and this is as side from the fact that Renee and Jeremy are such incredible people and gracious hosts. The property itself is beautiful. Perfect to cocoon yourself in nature and peaceful surrounds. "Matilta" is clean comfortable, contains everything you need and has the most wonderful and funky decor. The farm fresh eggs in the morning and spring fed ponds trickling at night take this from just a weekend away, to something you'll never forget, Grab yourself a local growler and enjoy it on your own private porch, with a view of the Oregon mountains and if your lucky a deer and her two fawns.
Not sure what the best part of our stay was :: the amazing Matilda or amazing hosts Renee & Jeremy or the property itself. What a treasure nestled in the Gorge.
Delicious blackberries everywhere, exquisite eggs from their hens, divine spring water and all the other elements required for a much-needed respite from the city.
Renee even hung a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" banner inside Matilda in honor of my daughter's matriculation to teenagerdom. We had intended to cruise around the Gorge (Renee is a professional expert on the Gorge) during our visit but we felt so at home there that we decided to just stick around until our reservation ended and to stay any longer would have been tantamount to trespassing.
Thanks so much for a fantastic few days of peace and pleasure!
