Amyrose was an excellent host and the property is an amazing small working farm with a fantastic mission.!The camp space is open, the amenities were as advertised, and we wish we had more time to chat with our hosts.

The location is an easy drive from Charlottesville and we would definitely stay there again when in the area!

We stayed at the Free Farm for 2 nights with 4 adults and 2 toddlers and it was amazing! It was our first time camping outside with our kids and they loved everything from being so close to so many animals (pigs, turkeys, chickens, pheasants, ducks, turtle, rabbits) and running around the spacious lawn.

The hosts are really the best. They reached out to us and gave us adequate information about the farm and gave us the space we needed. They were very responsible about keeping distance given the COVID-19 situation. We love cooking and they had so much nice cookware, a kids' table and a firepit that we used both nights. A bonus was their free eggs and vegetables. The bathroom is very clean.

The only issue we had were the birds chirping all throughout the night, which obviously the hosts couldn't control, but it was a surprise for us the first night when the birds kept singing literally all night. We think they were mockingbirds. Our kids slept fine through it, but the adults had problems until we turned on our white noise and it was fine. Make sure to bring ear plugs or white noise!

I'd highly recommend this spot, especially for people who love to spend time with animals!

Great time at Virginia Free Farm! Absolute blast for anyone who likes animals or heirloom veggies, the farm animals were super cute and friendly and the mini farm is very impressive. The hosts were SUPER nice and chill (helped us jump our car!!!) and were very helpful but also totally gave us space. Firewood, outhouse toilet, fire ring, hammock and benches all included in your space which is blocked off behind a tree so feels private. Beautiful countryside but not so isolated you couldn’t go get something if you needed to. Overall very peaceful night

Amyrose was an outstanding hostess, from preparing the amenities available to giving us a class on foraging wild mushrooms, and her husband including our kids with feeding the animals-which they loved! They all want guinea pigs now! The garden is incredible and she feeds over 550 local families with the fruits and vegetables they grow. Truly inspiring. We had a wonderful time and would love to return again. Also bathrooms were clean, best I’ve ever had camping. Propane gas stove, hammock, table, chairs and tent available which we used them all. Thank you again for sharing your farm with us!

We were welcomed by Amyrose and she told us all about this great farm with a fantastic mission.
When we arrived it was rainy she was so nice to offer us a gazebo tent to sit under.
There was a great fire pit with very nice benches around it we ended up to use as tables sometimes little thing like this makes a difference.
The chemical toilets were great I only wish there was an outdoor shower because this is a great place you like to stay longer.
It is so nice to be surrounded by this lovely landscape and animals of this farm.
Amyrose also gave us some great tips to visit in the area we went to a winery farmers market and brewery.
We would love to come back because Amyrose has great plans for this farm like to follow this.
Great place to stay with a fantastic host

Our multigenerational family one night stay was just a lot of fun for young grandkids (ages 4 and 11), parents, and grandparents.

The "Hipcamp" part of Virginia Tree Farm is the huge back yard of Amy Rose and Derek's farm home and outbuildings. Trees and an outbuilding provide a natural buffer and privacy for campers. The access road to the campsite is shared by a couple of distant other neighbors, who we never saw.

The amenities are as stated. But do bring your own potable water. The small, portable chemical toilet is the "self contained" kind, and requires a bit of experimentation to make it work, so ask the hosts! An instructional sign would help! It is housed in a building whimsically labeled "Elevators", which is full of various camp toys, a propane stove (apparently if you forget yours) and interesting photos and things to read.

Upon arrival in late afternoon, we set up 2 tents and spent time watching all the animals. "Pancakes", the spotted hog, and "Spider Pig", the potbelly hog, rummaged around the pen they shared with a duck and three turkeys. The chicken pen was overflowing with chickens, ducks, geese and who knows!
We soon had our camp stoves cooking our supper and the provided picnic table and a sun shade set up with some very nice benches. We also brought some portable lawn chairs. Later in the evening we had a nice campfire going in the firepit, and enjoyed an almost full moon. We met Derek, who was cordial and welcoming and told us a bit about himself and the Virginia Free Farm's mission.

At night, the highway sounds of I-64 provided a bit of white noise (perhaps a half mile away, totally obscured by distance and trees). It did not bother us, and we had no chirping birds to distract, as another reviewer reports. A heavy dew descended and made tent flies and things left outside coated by morning. It was 39 degrees at sunrise.

In the morning, Derek again appeared to feed the animals. Sensing feeding time, "Pancakes" put up a loud chorus of pig grunts. and to the great delight of all Derek let the grandkids offer bits of bread to the pigs. "Pancakes" nibbled gently without any danger of biting! "Spider Pig" was too shy. The chickens responded in their pen with a cacophony of clucking. Derek told us more about the VFF's operations and regaled us with stories of Spider Pig's escape and meanderings.

Our stay was a great way to camp out, get to know some friendly hosts, and still have all the privacy you want.

We enjoyed our relaxing stay at the Virginia Free Farm We located our 20 ft travel trailer in the open grass field behind the farm house and adjacent to the stone fire pit with plenty of room to spare. The trees and other farm buildings on site gave us ample seclusion and privacy. We loved the quiet farm atmosphere and being surrounded by the unobtrusive sounds of the farm animals, even the distant crowing of the roosters at sunrise. The hosts were kind, helpful, and generous as we would see them out and about working with the gardens and animals in pens distributed throughout the property. They were good at giving us our space but always available and ready to explain the workings of their farm and the many local benevolences and people in need they so graciously serve. Their amenities were exactly as described in their listing. The gift of fresh eggs on our last morning was a special treat. We would certainly stay here again.
