With a view over the ocean of trees and towns below, enjoy the breathtaking vistas, constant breezes, and privacy from this historic property.

The "Jefferson Sea" is a description many attribute to the nations 4th President, Thomas Jefferson, who enjoyed the sea-like view from his home at Monticello, a world heritage site that shares a similar view from the Southwest Mountains.

Perched on a ridge under mature cedars, our cabin likewise offers uninhibited eastern views from the Southwest Mountains, which is the first mountain range west of the Atlantic.  The views are big and far.  Some say you can even see Portugal!  Bring your binoculars and count how many water towers you can see.

Wake up relaxed and enjoy the vistas and natural beauty of bucolic farm land with towns below.  Here, constant breezes and wild life are abundant including eagles, hawks, turkey, fox, rabbit and numerous wild birds. At night, because no chemicals are used on these lands, you can enjoy an evening show of blinking fireflies, not to mention a full sky of stars - you can even see the Milky Way!

Our farm was the site of a Civil War battle and we can tell you where both Union and Confederate troops mustered.  Since then, a Richmond tobacco baron made this his summer estate. You can enjoy the giant Ginkgo Biloba trees, boxwood gardens, colossal Tulip Poplars, and Osage Orange trees he planted that are now thriving.  Enjoy walks through the trees, fields and rolling hills and eat a handful of wild organic raspberries in season.

ACTIVITIES & LOCATION

Just down the hill is the historic town of Gordonsville with perhaps the best BBQ on the east coast, a French restaurant, wine tasting room, quaint cafe, smattering of restaurants, a brewery slated to open in August, a liquor store, grocery store and much more. Within minutes are Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier and some of the nation’s finest vineyards, including Barboursville Vineyard and many others.

Numerous rivers, lakes, reservoirs, parks and trails are minutes away for swimming, kayaking (we offer kayaks available for rent), standup paddle boarding (SUP), fishing, hiking, mountain biking & more.  The Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville are within 30 minutes.  ATV trails are within an hours' drive.  It’s just an hour to Richmond or Harrisonburg and less than two to Washington, DC, or 3 to Virginia Beach.

DOGS

Friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome with prior approval & must be under voice or leash control at all times & must not bark at or chase the goats or touch the electric fence.  Please tell us about your dogs via email before booking.

INTERIOR

The cabin interior is an approximately 10x10 space that is brand new and freshly painted.  With two double-hung windows and screens along with a 6’ wide sliding glass door with screen, you get plenty of views and breezes to boot.  Even if the  weather becomes unruly, you can stay dry and comfy and still enjoy the views and breezes.

The cabin interior is furnished with a comfy Queen-size firm foam mattress and boxspring along with fresh linens and plenty of pillows perfect for lounging with a view.  There are two small tables with drawers and storage.  Two wooden rocking chairs mostly sit on the deck, but work inside, too.  The loo is a portable hospital potty chair with arms and a safe, secure and comfy seat that sits inside a small tent for privacy.  Special compostable bags that hardens any waste are provided and you will toss those bags into the trash & take the trash with you when you go.

We are very COVID-conscious!  We provide hand sanitizer, soap & water, fresh linens & towels & we wipe down all hard surfaces with anti-bacterial spray & wipes between guests.

Additional camp provisions include a few solar & battery powered lights; 5 gallon jug of water; trash can; outside bench & table with a view; folding chairs; outside solar shower bag with water; outside dry storage area; hand sanitizer & toilet paper; cards and a few games; an outside fire pit; lighter and first bundle of fire wood for your first campfire.

All you need to bring is YOU!  (and some flashlights, bug spray, sunscreen, food & drink)

We had such a lovely experience at John and Merritt’s site! It was exactly what we were looking for. They were very responsive before, during, and after our trip to make sure we were happy and comfortable. There were so many small touches of care that made our stay even more special (bouquet of flowers, bottle of wine, board games, food/hiking recommendations), not to mention some friendly goat neighbors next to our cabin 😊 Highly recommend this site!
