New ~ propane heater installed to keep you toasty on chilly evenings!

With a scenic view over the ocean of trees and towns below, enjoy the breathtaking vistas, constant breezes, and privacy from this historic property.

The "Jefferson Sea" is a description many attribute to the nations 4th President, Thomas Jefferson, who enjoyed the sea-like view from his home at Monticello, a world heritage site that shares a similar view from the Southwest Mountains.

Perched on a ridge under mature cedars, our cabin likewise offers uninhibited eastern views from the Southwest Mountains, which is the first mountain range west of the Atlantic.  The views are big and far.  Some say you can even see Portugal!  Bring your binoculars and count how many water towers you can see during the day and in the evening, watch the stars and look for Mars and Venus from the comfort of rocking chairs on the deck.

Wake up relaxed and enjoy the vistas and natural beauty of bucolic farm land with towns below.  Here, constant breezes and wild life are abundant including eagles, hawks, turkey, fox, rabbit and numerous wild birds. At night, because no chemicals are used on these lands, you can enjoy an evening show of blinking fireflies, not to mention a full sky of stars where on a clear night you can easily see the Milky Way and much more.

Our farm was the site of a Civil War battle and we can tell you where both Union and Confederate troops mustered.  Since then, a Richmond tobacco baron made this his summer estate. You can enjoy the giant Ginkgo Biloba trees, boxwood gardens, colossal Tulip Poplars, and Osage Orange trees he planted that are now thriving.  Enjoy walks through the trees, fields and rolling hills and eat a handful of wild organic raspberries in season.   We support BIPOC and all are welcome to enjoy our property :)

ACTIVITIES & LOCATION

Just down the hill is the historic town of Gordonsville with perhaps the best BBQ on the east coast, a French restaurant, wine tasting room, quaint cafe, smattering of restaurants, a brewery slated to open in August, a liquor store, grocery store and much more. Within minutes are Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier and some of the nation’s finest vineyards, including Barboursville Vineyard and many others.

Numerous rivers, lakes, reservoirs, parks and trails are minutes away for swimming, kayaking, standup paddle boarding (SUP), fishing, hiking, mountain biking & more.  The Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville are within 30 minutes.  ATV trails are within an hours' drive.  It’s just an hour to Richmond or Harrisonburg and less than two to Washington, DC, or 3 to Virginia Beach.

INTERIOR

The cabin interior is an approximately 10x10 space that is brand new and freshly painted.  With two double-hung windows and screens along with a 6’ wide sliding glass door with screen, you get plenty of views and breezes to boot.  Even if the  weather becomes unruly, you can stay dry and comfy and still enjoy the views and breezes.

The cabin interior is furnished with a comfy Queen-size firm foam mattress and boxspring along with fresh linens, cozy blanket and plenty of pillows perfect for lounging with a view.  There are two small tables with drawers and storage.  Two wooden rocking chairs mostly sit on the deck, but work inside, too.

NEW ~ We have added a propane heater to keep you toasty on chilly nights and we are BIPOC friendly <3.

RESTROOM & SHOWER FACILITIES

The loo is a portable hospital potty chair with arms and a safe, secure and comfy seat that sits inside a small tent for privacy.  Special compostable bags that hardens any waste are provided and you will toss those bags into the trash & take the trash with you when you go.

The Solar Shower will be filled & left in the sunshine to warm for you and we are happy to refill it as often as needed.  Towels are provided, too.

Friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome but we have pet rules out of necessity.  Prior to making your reservation, please email us & tell us about your dogs describing their breed, size, temperament, owners ability to control dog, confirm that dog will be leashed and under your control at all times and that all vaccinations are up to date.  There is a $25 fee per dog with a maximum of 2 dogs.  Please see separate Pet Policy for additional details.

We had such a lovely experience at John and Merritt’s site! It was exactly what we were looking for. They were very responsive before, during, and after our trip to make sure we were happy and comfortable. There were so many small touches of care that made our stay even more special (bouquet of flowers, bottle of wine, board games, food/hiking recommendations), not to mention some friendly goat neighbors next to our cabin 😊 Highly recommend this site!

The site had everything we could have wanted for a long weekend getaway from the city. The views were excellent and on clear nights you could see many stars! John was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. Looking forward to coming back again the the fall!

Cabin faces East, perfect to catch sunrise over the trees. Stars came out at night that could be seen by the fire. Plenty of firewood and John said he would help get a fire started if needed. Yes from the cabin with the solar lights provided by the host.

The cabin was very clean and well maintained and had an amazing view looking down the hill over the trees below! It was very private and quiet and had a beautiful sunset and sunrise. John met us at the top of the hill and showed us where everything was which was very helpful. Would definitely recommend this site to anyone interested!

My night at the sight was so nice! I got to watch deer go across the yard in front of the little house, and the whole area was just really relaxing to explore or sit by the fire. ☺

An expansive view lit up by stars and distant flickering lights, didn't disappoint, even through clouds and light rain. The cabin meets expectations as a suitable shelter with an extremely comfortable bed! The decently sized raised front porch allows for sky gazing from the provided rocking chairs or that sizeable bed. The fire pit and water supply is sufficient for preparing meals and relaxing, while the sun shower and bio toilet are also clean and enough. The area feels rather private, even while located on the owner's property. They are friendly, helpful, but not intrusive. There was a good balance of letting us be, but also checking in to meet any rising needs with recommendations. This property is close to town and other outdoor activities, which allows for you to feel as secluded or included as you desire. An overall memorable and valuable experience!

Solar powered lanterns for a functional aesthetic!
Take a walk up the hill on the property to enjoy the sunset.Elephant loved the provided dog bed!Expansive views, even under an overcast sky.

    A relaxing anniversary

I stayed in the Jefferson Sea Cabin with my girlfriend for our anniversary and was blown away by the views offered by this little spot. We were able to visit the Barboursville Vineyard and got dinner at the Barbeque Exchange, which were both great attractions. We enjoyed a fire at night thanks to the bundle of wood we added on to our stay. One unfortunate surprise was the amount of stink bugs within the cabin which we were constantly finding, even at time in the sheets of the bed. While this wasn’t any fault of John and Merritt, it did make our stay a little less comfortable than it might have been. Overall we loved our stay, John was so nice and welcoming and Gordonsville offers a great little escape. Definitely recommend!

Glad you enjoyed your stay in spite of the stinkbugs that suddenly descended on us that week. We have since sealed the cabin well and fortunately, the bugs have moved on. Hope to see you back!

We had a wonderful stay at John and Merritts cabin, lots of lovely views! The cabin is a cute, clean, and minimalistic room with a comfortable bed. The site was clean, stocked with plenty of chairs, gas burner, lanterns, wood, hand sanitizer, water to wash, and with a on-site toilet. John and Merritt were also very easy to communicate with and readily available if needed. John was there to welcome us when we arrived, gave us a brief history of the land and gave wonderful recommendations. Overall, great place to stay and would definitely recommend to anyone!!

I spent two nights in the cabin and it rained literally the entire time. So the fact that my stay was lovely and sweet and restorative should tell you something. The tiny cabin is clean and the bed is super comfortable and I was able to string a tarp under the trees to make my dinners on a campfire. I will definitely be coming back, hopefully this time with a view!
