Stay here if you love nature
This place was awesome! There was plenty of room to camp. Each campsite has its own fire ring. There is an additional fire pit with a chimney in a common area. The composting toilets are within sight of the campsites. It's right next to the river so there are plenty of places to fish and swim. There are Trails through the woods and plenty of Wildlife. I was even given dry firewood because it was raining the entire time I was there. I will definitely have to plan another trip there.
Beautiful and peaceful place
What a wonderful site and peaceful and helpful camp site owner Carl, John, and Maya!
We really appreciate them to be being so happy!
And definitely recommend this site to all of camper!
We will be got back sooner.
Absolutely lovely holiday weekend!
We had such a lovely stay at Sol River Homestead last weekend! My sister and I both arrived separately in the dark and had no issue with the directions. Cole met us right away and gave a super thorough tour, despite us arriving later in the evening. The space is so wonderful, with other kind families, tiki torches to light the way, super clean bathroom facilities- I could go on. Maya introduced herself one morning and made sure we had everything we needed. The best part was coming back from our hike and taking a dip in the river to cool off. Actually the best part was the lack of mosquitoes all weekend! We will definitely be back to this welcoming place.
The hosts were a very friendly and welcoming couple. The site was clean and right next to a stream. It was relaxing listening to the stream at night. I will definitely use again when I’m in the area.
A slice of mountain paradise
Camping at Sol River campground was like taking a gulp of life saving fresh air... literally and figuratively. With all the negativity and discord that is 2020, staying here was like stepping in to a different world. Serene, happy, laid back, inclusive, welcoming.
I am a mother camping solo with three young children. I felt completely safe, and my kids could run around and explore. At the end, we were all wishing we could stay longer!
Our hosts were all friendly. We spent the most time with Cole, and even just being there for a couple nights I can say he is a kindred spirit. He was so good with my kids, talking with them and really listening and responding to them... not in a ‘grown up to kid’ way, but a ‘person to person’ way that made them feel heard and understood. Ex: He taught my oldest how to build a fire, and had an in-depth discussion with my youngest about the totems on the stage, and timed her as she raced back and forth. lol
He was there any time we needed, but also gave us plenty of space and privacy.
The property is in a gorgeous location right between a mountain and the south fork of the Roanoke river. The campsites are right next to the river, and have access points to the water clearly marked with water droplet signs on tiki torches. The water is shallow enough for kids to play in safely. The sound of rushing water lulled us to sleep every night.
Each campsite has a stone firepit, with a grate and a log stump. They each have a picnic table with its own table torch. The posts marking the sites have hooks, which is handy.
You wake up every morning to the orchard and the mountain behind it.
At night, the stars are so impressive that we pulled our air mattress outside and slept in the open air so we could stare up at them. It’s all postcard perfect.
There were three campsites. They all had a comfortable amount of space. But they are not private. All three are in one big open space and very visible to each other. It would be great for group camping! We only had a neighbor passing through for the night, so we mostly had the place to ourselves.
There are a couple community gathering spots. One is a large stone fire pit with chimney and a large grate. It’s right across from the stage. There are two large trees spaced perfectly for a hammock.
Our favorite place, by far, was the swimming hole. It’s a short walk from camp, and private from the rest of everything. There is a platform with comfy chairs, and a bar height table. There is fire pit behind it.
It overlooks the river at a place where the water pools and becomes deeper. My kids had a blast playing in the water for hours, while I relaxed and watched them from the platform.
The hosts had only owned the property a few months when we visited, so there were buildings and structures being worked on. But it is already a gorgeous property, and it’s apparent that they have a beautiful vision for how to make it even better in the near future.
They already added an outhouse with two composting toilets. I had never used one before, and was surprised at how it did not stink at all! Right outside of that is a hand washing station that uses captured water. It’s a short walk from the campsites.
We really enjoyed the apple orchard (yum!), and the gardens were beautiful.
We enjoyed our stay very much and highly recommend it!
Beautiful, easy, welcoming camping
We had a really great time at Sol River Homestead! The meadow was perfect for the kids to run around and their exploring the river, garden, & trees was not only permitted but encouraged. Cole was fun and informative for us and the kids about how they are homesteading. The toilets and handwashing station were more than enough for us, the fire ring with handy grill option was ready and easy for us all to use. The site for the tent was flat and free of stones & sticks, so super easy to set everything up. The homestead is near the road, so it's easy to get to, and the river covers the sound of vehicles driving by -- we really enjoyed the sound of the river when we all bundled up for bed. We also loved the changes in colors and light with sundown and sunrise on the surrounding mountains and down the river valley. We would've stayed entertained for several nights instead of just one on our roadtrip, and are looking for excuses to return.
Wish we’d had more time to spend at this campsite, but we were just passing through. Maya accepted our reservation at the last minute and provided an ample amount of firewood for us to arrive (after dark) and feel extremely comfortable. As we were finishing our dinner, Cole (one of the property owners) came to greet us and let us know about the property. We even took him up on his recommendation to dunk in the creek in the morning. It was completely freezing but incredibly refreshing. We had to take off before we could really explore, but noted the adorable stage, well-engineered camping toilets, hand washing station, and small apple orchard. Highly recommend this campsite.
Wonderful riverside camping!
I stayed here for one night with my boyfriend and we had a fantastic experience. The three sites are spaced out well, so there's plenty of privacy, and they're right next to the river providing the most relaxing sound to fall asleep to. The entire area is well maintained, the picnic table and fire pit at our site were well built, the outhouses are super clean, and the scenery surrounding the site is simply beautiful. We felt lucky to snag a campsite during the height of fall foliage season on the Blue Ridge Parkway and would happily return. It's a very quiet and peaceful place. The host was friendly and welcoming upon our arrival and did their best to make sure we had a comfortable and enjoyable visit. While I like camping in the midst of the woods, being in a more open area allowed us to enjoy ample star gazing which was the icing on the cake. Absolutely recommend staying here!
Such a lovely place to camp! The sites are right next to a stream, and walking trails. The host was so kind, and the site was well kept. Will definitely be coming back to stay here again!
