About Hazel River Campsite
Our campsites are private and are adjacent the Hazel River. Each site has a grill, fire ring and picnic table. In the community area, we have a large, covered pavilion with a cement floor and granite bar that overlooks the River. Our community picnic table can easily accommodate 16-20 people. There is a flushing toilet nearby. There is access to over 100 acres of privately owned property with miles of wooded trails along the river. You can also reserve the entire property (Friday through Sunday) for your own private party! Host your family reunion, company picnic or even your wedding! We also have a cabin available for those who prefer to sleep in a bed! There are no refunds for bad weather, but we will offer a rain date.

One of the best camping experiences I have had in a while! As someone who likes any form of camping - whether it be in the woods, on a mountain, in the desert, or by the water - I was able to appreciate Hazel River Hideaway for all that it was. On last second notice, Tim and Peggy (owners) were nothing but helpful to our small camping crew. Heading down from D.C (only an hour and a half drive), we did not know exactly what to expect from the weekend but boy were we pleasantly surprised.
It is immediately apparent how much Tim and Peggy love this plot of land. It has been in their family for a long time, and renting it out to respectful campers is a way that they are able to share their land, meet new people and keep everything sustainable. As for the property itself, you are set up right along the beautiful Hazel river - perfect to take a dip and cool off, throw in a fishing rod, or pay a small fee to be taken up and dropped off with some tubes to float down directly to your tent.
The farm that Tim owns (which the land sits on) offers horse back rides along with a plethora of other activities to do during the day, perfect for kids and families. Whether you want to relax by the river, hike around the property, grill out with some beers, or hop in the car and check out nearby historic Culpepper, the location is absolutely perfect for it all.
An amazing experience that I have already recommended to friends in the surrounding area and even planned a trip back in a few short weeks! If you are looking for an activity-filled weekend with woods and water - look no further - Hazel River Hideaway is your answer.
There are just not enough good things I can say about our stay with Peggy and Tim. We booked our trip at the last minute and because they were booked they cleared out a new camp space for us! It was a gorgeous private spot right on the river bank. The privacy at Hazel River is unbeatable. Tim and Peggy were so accommodating and kind . We cannot wait to go back!
You may be able to find other campsites that are on the river and beautiful... but, you won't find hosts so accommodating and lovely! Throughout the planning process, Peggy was so helpful... whether it was about weather updates, suggestions for campsites (they have over 200 acres) or her willingness to move our date given predicted bad weather. When we arrived, her husband Tim took us to our campsite.. He was so sweet! Even when we realized we didn't bring enough charcoal to cook our dinner and the firewood was wet due to rain, he personally showed up with more charcoal! Not only do we highly recommend Peggy and Tim's campgrounds, we can't wait to plan our next trip there!
First of all, this area is beautiful. Lots of trees and birds to spot while hiking, and lots of great views of the river. My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights here, upgrading to the cabin on the property half-way thru due to inclement weather.
From the start, Peggy and Tim were friendly, hospitable, and accommodating. We met Peggy at the barn during check in, and after petting some of the horses stabled there, we went down to our campsite along the river. The area was well kept and firewood had been left for our use. Throughout the weekend Peggy made sure to keep in contact with us as the weather turned to rain. The cabin on the property is cute and quaint. Upgrading to it was a real treat! Both the campsite and the cabin are near several trails to hike on, and those are well marked and well-kept. Heather took us horseback riding along some trails for a small fee. It was a great way to get to know the area and its history.
We'd highly recommend this location and we can't wait to come back and visit.
