After a great meal of farm raised products, step off the property into the George Washington National Forest to hike along the many trails or head over to Bryce Four Season Resort (only 4 miles away) for a full day of fun golfing, grass skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking, zip lines, snow skiing, snow boarding, tubing and many other activities. In addition, Lake Laura is also just 3 miles away for fishing, boating, hiking, beach and swimming. Shenandoah Valley Music Festival is just 4 miles away and offers a variety of outdoor concerts during the summer weekends.  We'll let you know who's playing on our Facebook page.  After a full day of having fun, doze off to the sounds of the woodlands where you might hear an owl or a coyote or two.

After finding a number of first-come, first-served sites full, we jumped on Hipcamp and found Rendesvous Farm not far away. Allen and Peggy were excellent hosts, and came by to greet us shortly after we arrived, even though the booking was last-minute. The sites were broad and well-isolated. We had plenty of space and privacy to enjoy our evening, even with two other campers occupying adjacent sites. The site is fairly basic -- a 5-gallon potable water jug that they were nice enough to refill for us after our evening wash-up, and a well-built stone fire ring to keep the fire contained. A stand for the jug might be helpful, so bring along a camping chair for washing and canteen filling if you can.
All sites are drive-up, so carrying gear is a non-issue. High-quality firewood was free and on-hand, and a small chemical toilet in a pop-up changing tent that was surprisingly clean occupied the center of the campground. We didn't expect cell service, but I had full bars, which made contacting the hosts and mapping out our next day of hiking a breeze.

The property has a lot of trails, and we did some light hiking through some hunting grounds and another path down a stream that led to a nearby local water station. The property links with the National Forest, so there is plenty to explore! Camping alongside the horse pasture offered a great view as well. We didn't visit the surrounding hikes, but a drive up a local mountain is said to offer some trails and great views.

As a note, make sure you're prepared to cross some well-worn dirt roads to reach the property. We didn't have much trouble in a minivan, but mud might find you asking for a tow and you might scrape the bottom of a low-slung car. If you're not used to country roads, drive slow and be prepared to pull over, and watch for other city-slickers making their way into the forest for the weekend.

Hey Anthony! Thanks for the great input! We are new to hipcamp and always growing and learning! We have picnic tables coming to the sites (we are picking them up tomorrow)...just had a little snag in getting them here earlier - as the state of Virginia opened up private campgrounds they also opened elective surgery and my husband was on schedule for a total knee replacement. We are definitely working on upgrading/growing. We placed some signs earlier today, but there are definitely more we need to get up. The national forest is at the edge of our property where our chicken coops are...so you were right there. :) We also border the National Forest at the back of our property too. We're lucky! Two sides!

We had a great time camping here. This was our first hipcamp experience and we will be doing this again! The hosts are great, and very responsive with communication. The farm itself was very charming. It was great to camp next to the horses and the rooster let us know when it was time to wake up! We drove the 30 or so minutes to Big Schloss which was a great hike. Lovely experience overall, and we would definitely recommend!

After we struck out on all the first come first serve sites in the Monongahela National Forest on Day One of our adventure landing us back at home, followed by an ultimately unsuccessful deep dive for any reservable campsites in the region, we decided to give HipCamp a shot.

I have to admit that we were a little concerned that it might not be what we wanted. It turned out to be far better than we ever could have imagined and ended up staying two extra nights there and cancelling reservations we had at a campground in Shenandoah NP.

Peggy and Allen were incredibly friendly and sweet. A fellow camper had some serious car troubles and they went above and beyond to help them get through it. They made sure we had water and firewood every day. We ended up buying a dozen fantastic eggs from them while camping, and also ended up home a goodie bag of beets, cucumbers, a zucchini, and even more beautiful multicolored eggs.

The site itself was awesome. There are two more sites nearby, but plenty far enough away to still feel separate, and one more on the other side of the horse enclosure. It feels far more private and remote than any public or large private campgrounds I’ve ever stayed in. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning. We spent most of our days just exploring the area. The vacation homes around Bryce Mountain are beautiful. If you turn onto Crooked Run past the Mennonite Church, you can drive over the mountain and down into West Virginia. It is a very rugged road, and dangerous if wet or snowy for sure, but quite an adventure. There are lots of places to splash around in the water, and we found one swimming hole close by that has a house sized boulder on the side of it that makes for a calm, deep, clean place to spend a hot day.

We are planning to come back with our kids, and can’t wait to share the beauty of Rendezvous Farm and the surrounding area with them.

We were greeted upon our arrival and were made to feel right at home as Peggy and Allen introduced themselves , offering us any assistance we may need during our visit. They provided us a dozen delicious eggs fresh from their chickens, showed us where our fresh potable water and wood for fire was (already conveniently in our camp site) suggested a couple local places to hike and even generously offered us a freshly picked mushroom from their afternoon stroll that my friend and I cooked up with our breakfast the next morning.
The site was surrounded by a couple other homes that all had animals on them which made the camping experience unique. We got to wake up to the sounds of roosters crowing (much nicer than my usual work alarm) and got to watch horses graze in their pens as we enjoyed our afternoon meals.
There was an outhouse tent on site that was very well maintained making it a much more luxurious camping trip than expected or used to. Fresh water was provided every day along with wood being replenished.
It is Peggy and Allen’s first season hosting campers but I would say they are already HipCamp pros. They even helped us out on the last morning after our car battery died on us (oops😅) .
Great area , great site, great host and a great trip.
Cannot thank these guys enough for the hospitality and the well needed break from the usual routine.

Rendezvous farms is a lovely little place with camp sites situated next to a horse pasture. Peggy and Allen are fantastic hosts - if you stay here you should definitely buy some muffins and/or eggs from them! The camp site comes fully prepared with drinking water and water to extinguish your late night campfire. Being situated far from the city, the night sky isn't polluted by light which makes for a perfect moonlit slumber.
