wendy"s place was such an amazing spot with a wide open field that had a 360 view of the mountains. you have a choice of either camping out in the open field or the other two more secluded spots in the woods by the river, i would recommend getting there early in order to catch some amazing sunsets. overall this spot is spectacular and a great place to bring lots of friends and family along with your furry friends.
Great stay @ james river depot
Wendy was a lovely host, providing an even lovelier campsite! I visited in June with my two dogs and she noticed we were seeking river access. She set us up with her campsite with the most privacy and a really nice pebbly beach on the river. The site even had a wood pile protected by a tarp, which was very helpful as it rained for awhile before my arrival! I spent 1 night at James River Depot and went for a paddle the next day. If you're in the area and wanting to take advantage of the river, consider booking a trip with Wilderness Canoe Company right around the corner!
2 nights and 16 miles
Great riverfront camp spot. Our party of 6 brought our own canoes, camped Friday, and launched at the Buchanan river access on Saturday morning-ish. Paddled for about 7 hours and then pulled the boats out at the campsite for another night of camping. Great weekend trip. Campsite was well maintained and had plenty of room to spread out. We used the riverfront spot in the woods for hanging out and set our tents up on the edge of the hay field. Porter potty was clean and the site was private, with the exception of 1 other group. I would definitely return here again for a similar river weekend. Thanks Wendy!
Beautiful views of the river and surrounding mountains and hay field. Excellent accommodations-site was clean, wood chips layed out over site, inhibiting weeds. Nice picnic table with benches! Plenty of shade and sunny areas. Easy/close access to the river. Very private other than a few passerby’s floating down the river. Host was super responsive and helpful. Absolutely loved it! Definitely will return!
Relaxing opportunity to get away
Great camp site with plenty of firewood already split, and tons more that needed splitting. The porta-potty was very clean. Directions were perfect. The trains passing by at all hours of the day/night make this a 9.5/10 instead of 10/10, but I would definitely come back.
Glistening river, field of stars
This site was such a special treat and the pictures don't do it justice. Each of the 4 campsites located on the property are stellar and have unique benefits to each. There were campers at the site next to ours, but we rarely saw them and could barely make out the dim glow of their fire from our site. The magic of this property may seem like the water access, but the field is MAGICAL at night -- we were lucky enough to go during the Hunter's Moon and reap the benefits of having no light pollution.
An upside to all this is that attractions like the natural bridge and microbreweries are less than 10 minutes away so you can venture out without it being a production.
The hosts are amazing -- they live very close, but aren't located on the property, which they use for hay. Wendy is very responsive and had great hiking recommendations. We met her super friendly and helpful husband, who was out chopping wood for the sites. We feel so grateful they are willing to share their property.
We give this site a 10/10.
Secluded and private!
What a beautiful and secluded spot! We were looking for something very private and this spot met all expectations. We had many acres all to ourselves. There was one other camping group there, but they were so far away, we could only see the top part of their car, and we never saw them or heard them once. Our dog loved it too. Can't wait to come back in the summer.
Magical night trains
Beautiful camp site along the river and the trains running in the night were magical. In the pitch dark you would hear the whistle and then see the lights on the engine sparkling through the fog and the trees.
