If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We needed a place last minute while traveling through the area & Leslie’s spot worked great for our needs. There are a few basic small wooded tent spots & a remote backup spot perfect for a pop up or off grid camper (our rig).
A common fire pit & horseshoes are also there.
We came in late so they let us park in their backyard. We wound up staying a second night & hiked around the area. If you’re looking for quiet, remote & basic then this area will work.
Leslie was very helpful with everything I needed! She and her husband were very patient with me and my many phone calls with questions! I love their property and the fact it's so close to great hiking trails!
Leslie and her husband were very gracious and helpful hosts with a lot of knowledge about the area! We needed a camping spot last minute after everything filled up for Labor Day weekend, and their property worked perfectly for us. Lots of places to camp ranging from open grassy areas to more secluded wooded areas. Super easy access to bathroom and water. If you're planning on hiking McAfee Knob or any of the nearby trails this place is the perfect spot for setting up camp! I definitely hope to come back!
Great stay close to the knob
Overall our stay was good and the location can’t be beat in terms of proximity to the AT. That said, I think our time would have been better if we had a 4wd vehicle and had there been less campers.
Because we arrived a bit later in the day we were able to find a spot (but it wasn’t particularly flat). I would say this is an idea hammock camping destination!
They were right that it is very close to the trail head. However the portable restroom they mentioned was crushed and not usable. They tried to fix it later that night to no avail. We weren’t allowed to have a fire at our sight and had to use the one in her backyard, so once it got dark and cold if you wanted to just be a your sight It was in the tent. The firewood was some branches that were still damp too, I had brought my own but still. I really think it’s just some sites thrown up in her back yard, there are other houses close by and they drove by often
Hope it’s better for you ...
Broken porta potty, owner states tree crashed it and is in process of repair , had to get in car and drive to convenience store to use restroom, no fire allowed at campsite, so there is cooking at your campsite, had to use fire ring in owners backyard.....only firewood to use was dead branches. Not a fan, hope things get better here....
The most important info I can provide comes first: Listen to the host's directions when leaving --- Do not take Oakey Dolin Road even though your GPS says to, we took this road and almost had to call a tow truck because our low clearance vehicle was stuck on the off-road style terrain...luckily we escaped through pushing the car over a difficult spot and placing rocks under the tires.
The camping was good for the price and you probably won't find anything closer to the major hikes like Mcafee knob, Dragon's Tooth, or Tinker cliffs than this. Although the driveway can be a bit tough for low clearance vehicles, would come back and thank you for hosting us!
