This gorgeous expanse of forest nestled in the foothills of VA feels so removed from civilization yet is minutes away from dining and shopping (if needed). This beautiful homestead welcomes the adventurer and soothes the soul with plenty of room to roam and explore. Great cell service but I was so enraptured by the majestic scenery that I let my phone die for 2 days and didn’t miss it! Great for families; the host is very accommodating and the property is very well-kept, we had all the privacy we needed and the free-range fowl added to the experience (you simply MUST get some eggs while you are visiting)! We tent camped during some near freezing overnight temps but the host kept us in ample supply of firewood for a very affordable price and we stayed cozy around the very large campfire! During this time of COVID, I have been unable to visit with my sons and my grandchildren, to be able to spend time in such a beautiful setting just lifted my spirits and fed my soul.

Greetings from our feathered friends!Use of the tripod came in handy around the large campfire ring!Very pet friendly!Family picture taken at nearby Silver Lake Park

There is a trampoline next to the driveway and a “pirate ship” playground off to the left as you pull in. Free range chickens and turkeys(?) hung out next to the house. The house Itself is actually a beautiful log cabin chalet. There is a bathroom easily accessible in the finished walk in basement. There were some air bnb guests as well. We had a nice conversation over the campfire near the cabin. There was parking at this site making car camping easy and convenient. Ken was there to greet me upon arrival and showed me all over his land. He was super friendly and had firewood ready to go for a small fee.

I choose a private and secluded site down a hillside next to a pond. I heard occasional cars passing in the distance, but the sound of the nearby creek nearly drowned them out. There were several short paths crisscrossing the property and Ken allowed camping anywhere that was flat enough to pitch a tent. The moon was so bright that evening, I was able to climb and explore the hillsides after dark.

Between the playground, close in fire ring and access to a bathroom, this campsite is ideal for a first time family camping trip. The location is less than an hour away from DC depending on traffic and convenient to a lake with swimming, hiking and perfect for kayaking or canoeing. There is also a winery minutes away. I highly recommend this campsite whether you prefer car camping or walk in sites.

I had a lovely time! The written directions to get to the site were easy to follow, so I had no trouble finding the spot and getting set up. I stayed in the main clearing, near the picnic table, and it was very convenient for water and access to the rest of the property. I enjoyed the guinea fowl and chickens roaming around, and Kenneth even shared fresh eggs with me! The pond was lovely and secluded, and I saw evidence of other camps near it, so if I had been looking for more remote camping, I could easily have found it. I was a little nervous about the no-toilet situation, but it turns out the property is a ten minute drive from Walmart, which made for convenient Ice-and-other-things pit-stops.
I was solo camping, and felt safe with Kenneth and his family nearby. I wasn't lucky with the weather on this trip and he was also super helpful on that front, offering to provide me use of some tarps and ropes to build a rain shelter in the trees. As it was, I decided not to tough it out and he helped me pack up in the rain, let me dry out in the workshop, and went above and beyond when I got my car stuck in the mud (entirely my fault) and he braved the rain to help me get un-stuck then make sure I was safely on my way.

My family and I had a great time camping on Ken’s property. I took my wife and two young kids for a long weekend. Ken was very accommodating and even let us use his portable propane grill for cooking. He had a picnic table at the campsite so we were able to keep all of our food off the ground. We picked a somewhat level spot for our tent in the woods just a few yards from the campfire and our car. The site is on a slope - it’s a hilly area - so there aren’t a lot of flat spots.

My son loved playing on the trampoline and meeting the dog, chickens, guinea, turkeys, and ducks. He had fun exploring the pirate ship and swings. Ken gave me a tutorial in firewood chopping which was greatly appreciated. There was so much to do, everyone was tired out by the end of the day.

The campsite was on the next ridge from the main house. Not super private, but far enough away. We could have camped out in the woods but wanted to be near the car. We did have to go to the bathroom out in the woods, but we were prepared for that (see amenities).

We spent one of the days fishing for bluegill at Silver Lake, only a 10 minute drive away. We also went to WalMart for live bait, only 15 minutes away. I really enjoyed the campfire/fire pit and cooking our meals outside. Ken was a generous host and made sure we didn’t want for anything. He even gave us some fresh eggs. His place is a great value for being so close to DC.

Kenneth was welcoming and very kind. Everything was wonderful for my birthday trip. The only thing that customers should be aware of is that the site isn't really for young kids 1-4. It's on a bit of a hill and has some building materials and uncut grasses near the camp site. The pond is a hike from the site. Overall is was perfect for my adult family.

We had a great time. Kenneth was very communicative and helpful. We ended up picking an easy spot that was closer to their house than we were expecting, but it was fine.
