Primitive camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Welcome to our quiet, peaceful bush retreat in Anakie - home to kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and many possum species. Whether you're here for bushwalking, gold-panning, bike riding, wineries or just to escape, you'll find it at all.
We're 6km from Del Rios Winery - MAGNIFICENT- and about the same from Fairy Park. Anakie Gorge isn't much further, and the You Yangs are about 15 minutes drive away.
The historic township of Steiglitz is only 5 minutes drive away the opposite direction down De Motts Road. You'll find nice bushwalks here too. Austin's winery is also only 15mins away. The Great Ocean Road is 45mins drive away.
We have a number of campsites, where we welcome self-contained campers, so you must have your own camp loo and take all waste with you. We also have a lovely cottage which can be found on G maps and HeirBnB, for those who would like a little extra comfort.
Campfires can be lit during non-fire-ban periods (winter), using our abundance of firewood.
When you arrive, the driveway splits, and you can go right, following the post and rail fence past the enclosed veggie patch, between the chook shed to the site next to the water tanks. Or, follow the steep 4x4 road (we've taken our 2WD REAR wheel wheel drive cars down without a problem, but front wheel drive cars really struggle coming back up) down to the dam, and turn left up the valley to pitch a tent anywhere you like. Just don't block the road through because we use it too. You can walk all the way up the valley, back up to the driveway.
Oreo (Red Kelpie, 8) and Stitch (Whippet x Kelpie, 3) will find you at some stage when you're setting up or visiting the Chooks up near the house.
Our Alpacas don't like dogs, and are wary of little kids on their own if you go in to their paddock to pat them, so please be mindful. You're better off staying out of their paddock. They're also fairly fussy eaters, but you're welcome to feed them!Welcome to our quiet, peaceful bush retreat - home to koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and many possum species. The historic township of Steiglitz is only 5 minutes drive away the opposite direction down De Motts Road. You'll find nice bushwalks here too. Austin's winery (also spectacular) is 17 mins (20km) away. The Great Ocean Road is 45mins drive away.
We only offer a few camping sites, so there is plenty of space to find privacy. Important to note, you must be self-contained with your own camp loo and take all waste with you.
Campfires can be lit only during non-fire-ban periods (basically winter), using firewood you need to cut for yourself.
Please don't burn the stump seats next to the dam.
No fires from 24th December 2023 until May 2024.
Option 1) 2WD cars: When you arrive, you can camp just inside the gates to the left or right. To the right, you can walk in about 20m to a nice clearing. Heavy Caravans are limited to the cleared area at the front, not far from the road and next to our driveway. Pop top / light campervans have been fine getting up and down the steep 4x4 track to the dam.
Further down, the driveway splits at the giant Lego flowers.
Option 2: 2WD cars) Follow the road to the dam until just before it gets steep where you'll see a sign saying "4x4 only past this point" (opposite the shed with green firewood in it. Please don't use this wood either). You can park off the road on the left and walk down towards the grass trees. It's not a big flat area, but it's nice.
Option 2, 4x4 only: We've had the track to the dam re-surfaced, but if you're in a 2WD car, leave your car up the top (as described above) and walk down. Camper trailers that are light enough to make it back up the hill with a very capable 4x4 have been alright, but don't take caravans down.
Once you're at the dam, turn left up the valley to pitch a tent anywhere you like. Just don't block the road through because we use it too. You can walk all the way up the valley, back up to the driveway.
Oreo (Red Kelpie, 9) and Stitch (Whippet x Kelpie, 3) will find you at some stage (if we're home & they're out) when you're setting up or visiting the Chooks and Alpacas.
Our Alpacas don't like dogs, and are wary of little kids on their own if you go in to their paddock to pat them, so please be mindful. They're also fairly fussy/timid eaters, but you're welcome to feed them! They generally don't spit at you, just at each other when there's food involved. It's not uncommon to get caught in the cross-fire though 🤮
Wheel chair access: We're on very steep terrain; Once you're in the valley, you can get yourself around (speaking from experience). There are no sealed paths, but there are also no steps.
