About Shiretown Campground
This campground features stunning, panoramic views of the First Branch of the White River in the verdant hills of central Vermont. It overlooks the Shire Town of Orange County, Chelsea, Vermont.
Free Verse Farm is a hilltop herb farm run by two art-making, herb-loving farmers. The property boasts twenty sloping, knoll-laden, open acres overlooking the First Branch of the White River as it passes through the scenic village of Chelsea, Vermont. We have incredible views, forest trails that offer magical woodland wanderings, and a wide range of campsites available in our fields.
We also invite you to explore our cultivated fields of herbs and vegetables and become acquainted with the wide variety of tea, culinary, and medicinal herbs that we grow and process on our farm. Our full line of herbal products are for sale out of our farmhouse apothecary. Seasonal vegetables, meat, and eggs may also be for sale. Please inquire.
You can also visit with our friendly flock of chickens and the cows that spend their summer munching our delicious green pastures.
For amenities we offer a hot outdoor shower & sink, as well as an outhouse with a composting toilet.
The town of Chelsea hosts a weekly summer farmers market on Fridays from 3-6pm (May through September), and is also home to a pub (The Wagon Wheel), a diner (Dixie's), two town greens, a small library, and a general store. Within 30-45 minutes of our farm you can reach the larger towns of Montpelier (state capital), South Royalton, Woodstock, and the Upper Valley Region (Dartmouth College), all of which offer a wide variety of attractions and services. Upon your arrival you will be given a welcome packet with information about our area and we'll be happy to provide you with any other tips you're looking for.
We look forward to hosting campers and sharing our love of this land with all who visit. We can't wait to meet you!

The vibe at Shiretown Campground
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
The host(s), Misha and Taylor, were very easy to communicate with and their response time to questions was quick. Their Hipcamp profile was very detailed in terms of amenities and what to expect. Their location was very easy to find based on their directions. Upon our arrival around 4:30pm Saturday, Taylor met us in the front yard and we did a meet & greet. From there she took us on a walking tour of the farm and our amenities (wonderful outdoor shower with hot/cold water and large double farm sink next to shower that also had hot/cold drinkable water for brushing teeth and doing dishes. Next we took a walk up the winding farm road to our camp site location (500ft as the crow flies from the farm house). Stunning views of the valley! Along the farm road near the campsite there was a new, compostable toilet that was very clean and easy to use. Back at the farmhouse we met the other host Misha :-) After our farm tour, Taylor told us about a nano-brewery 10 minutes away that was open until 6:00pm where there would be food and live music as well as good beer....so we dropped off all our camping gear at our site and rode our motorcycles to the brewery. Great fun! Great beer! And we had plenty of time to enjoy the live music and get back to our camp to set up for the night and cook some dinner. What a beautiful night of camping we had! So peaceful and quiet. We both woke up around 4am and peeked out of the tent....the night sky was clear and FULL OF STARS and there was a fog sitting over the town in the valley below. Breathtaking! The next morning we both enjoyed hot showers and made coffee and hot chocolate at our campsite, then hit the road for a motorcycle adventure. We stopped by the farmhouse to let Misha & Taylor know we would be off on a motorcycle ride. We returned late Sunday evening just in time to make some snacks and enjoy the sunset and amazing view of the surrounding hills and valleys. Monday morning we packed up to head home. Once again we stopped by the farmhouse to say goodbye. Misha & Taylor are such friendly and helpful hosts, giving you as much space or assistance as you need. Definitely bookmarked their Hipcamp profile because we will be returning! -Lisa & Seth
What a gem of a place! There is so much room to spread out here and the views are incredible. Taylor and Misha were fabulous hosts. We loved touring the farm, buying veggies and eggs for our camp dinner, and most of all, setting up camp in a field full of wildflowers.
Even though we had a good deal of rain, we enjoyed every bit of our experience at Free Verse Farm. Definitely recommend this place!
Gorgeous view, arguably one of the best camping views you'll come across! Misha and Taylor are extremely welcoming and provide you with everything you need for the stay: privacy, running water, an outhouse, shower, dish station, firewood, firepit, picnic table, even fresh veggies and eggs from their farm! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great get away camp spot!
We loved our stay - atop a beautiful hill, with nothing but stars above us. We were lucky to have both Camp 1 & 2 to ourselves, and it was private, and quiet. Misha was very accommodating, taking the time to share with us a well designed map of the property, to provide us a few eggs and if you want tea - this is the place!
Beautiful location, and everything you need for a camping in comfort. Hot water at an outdoor shower, outdoor sink to wash dishes and a fire pit with dry wood for sale. Overall a great camping experience among Vermont farmland with spectacular views.
Misha and Taylor very welcoming!. Great location and privacy overlook beautiful landscape. Steep drive to get to campsite so if in a smaller car could be issue if wet road. Having SUV would make much easier (I drive a mini). Very clean outhouse. Would definitely return!
