***CODID-19 UPDATE (5/22): The situation is evolving every week here. Our governor just relaxed regulations to allow Vermont residents, or those who have been in Vermont and quarantined for 14 days, to stay at campsites. We have decided not to open up yet as we try to figure out the best way to open safely for us and our guests. However, I would expect that we will come up with a plan soon to open our campground for the summer. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any further questions. We're sorry that are not yet able to accommodate Hipcampers, but we very much look forward to welcoming you here soon. Be well!***

This campground features stunning, panoramic views of the First Branch of the White River in the verdant hills of central Vermont. It overlooks the shire town of Orange County, Chelsea, Vermont.

Free Verse Farm is a hilltop herb farm run by two art-making, herb-loving farmers. The property boasts twenty sloping, knoll-laden, open acres overlooking the First Branch of the White River as it passes through the scenic village of Chelsea, Vermont. We have incredible views, forest trails that offer magical woodland wanderings, and a wide range of campsites available in our fields.

We also invite you to explore our cultivated fields of herbs and vegetables and become acquainted with the wide variety of tea, culinary, and medicinal herbs that we grow and process on our farm. You can also visit with the cows that spend their summer munching our delicious green pastures. Our full line of herbal products are for sale out of our farmhouse apothecary. Seasonal vegetables, meat, and eggs may also be for sale.

AMENITIES: we offer a hot outdoor shower & sink, as well as an outhouse with a composting toilet, firepits, and picnic tables.

CAMPSITE DETAILS: Sites 1 and 2 are located in our upper meadow, with beautiful views of the First Branch Valley. 4 wheel drive is recommend, but not necessary, and you are always welcome to hike up to your site. Each site is spacious and private.

The village of Chelsea hosts a weekly summer farmers market May-September on Fridays from 3-6pm (May through September), and is also home to a pub (The Wagon Wheel), gas station, two town greens, a small library, art gallery café, thrift shop, and a general store. Within 20-45 minutes of our farm you can reach the larger towns of Montpelier (state capital), South Royalton, Randolph, Woodstock, White River Junction, and the Upper Valley Region (Dartmouth College), all of which offer a wide variety of attractions and services. Upon your arrival you will be given a welcome packet with more detailed information about our area, and we'll be happy to provide you with any other tips you're looking for.

We look forward to hosting hipcampers and sharing our love of this land, and our region, with all who visit. We can't wait to meet you!

-Taylor & Misha

The host(s), Misha and Taylor, were very easy to communicate with and their response time to questions was quick. Their Hipcamp profile was very detailed in terms of amenities and what to expect. Their location was very easy to find based on their directions. Upon our arrival around 4:30pm Saturday, Taylor met us in the front yard and we did a meet & greet. From there she took us on a walking tour of the farm and our amenities (wonderful outdoor shower with hot/cold water and large double farm sink next to shower that also had hot/cold drinkable water for brushing teeth and doing dishes. Next we took a walk up the winding farm road to our camp site location (500ft as the crow flies from the farm house). Stunning views of the valley! Along the farm road near the campsite there was a new, compostable toilet that was very clean and easy to use. Back at the farmhouse we met the other host Misha :-) After our farm tour, Taylor told us about a nano-brewery 10 minutes away that was open until 6:00pm where there would be food and live music as well as good beer....so we dropped off all our camping gear at our site and rode our motorcycles to the brewery. Great fun! Great beer! And we had plenty of time to enjoy the live music and get back to our camp to set up for the night and cook some dinner. What a beautiful night of camping we had! So peaceful and quiet. We both woke up around 4am and peeked out of the tent....the night sky was clear and FULL OF STARS and there was a fog sitting over the town in the valley below. Breathtaking! The next morning we both enjoyed hot showers and made coffee and hot chocolate at our campsite, then hit the road for a motorcycle adventure. We stopped by the farmhouse to let Misha & Taylor know we would be off on a motorcycle ride. We returned late Sunday evening just in time to make some snacks and enjoy the sunset and amazing view of the surrounding hills and valleys. Monday morning we packed up to head home. Once again we stopped by the farmhouse to say goodbye. Misha & Taylor are such friendly and helpful hosts, giving you as much space or assistance as you need. Definitely bookmarked their Hipcamp profile because we will be returning! -Lisa & Seth

8am Memorial Day morning. Time to pack up and head home....scattered showers headed our way, but for now, enjoying the big, puffy clouds and dry weather for packing up. Bye Misha & Taylor! See you again soon!Plenty of glorious space for our tent and tarp protection. There was a wooden picnic table and 2 benches to use for dinner preparations and unpacking/packing.Relaxed and ready to enjoy the amazing view! No pesky mosquitoes to ruin our outdoor experience. Wide open sky and a hint of moon as seen from our campsite.

What a gem of a place! There is so much room to spread out here and the views are incredible. Taylor and Misha were fabulous hosts. We loved touring the farm, buying veggies and eggs for our camp dinner, and most of all, setting up camp in a field full of wildflowers.

Even though we had a good deal of rain, we enjoyed every bit of our experience at Free Verse Farm. Definitely recommend this place!

Gorgeous view, arguably one of the best camping views you'll come across! Misha and Taylor are extremely welcoming and provide you with everything you need for the stay: privacy, running water, an outhouse, shower, dish station, firewood, firepit, picnic table, even fresh veggies and eggs from their farm! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great get away camp spot!

I had the good fortune of staying at Shiretown last fall in the midst of a long road trip. The land is gorgeous - I spent a good amount of time just marveling at how gorgeous the sunrise over the valley was. There is an exceptionally clean composting toilet available, as well as an outdoor shower. If you've never taken a shower outdoors, I highly recommend it! I also explored a trail that extends behind Shiretown, and found berries. The hosts are kind and understated, and are happy to talk but also furnish plenty of privacy. They have some herbal products for sale - I highly recommend trying their herbal cream. One note - the camp areas are wide open with no trees to speak of, so plan on bringing a tent - it's not suitable for hammock camping.

We loved our stay - atop a beautiful hill, with nothing but stars above us. We were lucky to have both Camp 1 & 2 to ourselves, and it was private, and quiet. Misha was very accommodating, taking the time to share with us a well designed map of the property, to provide us a few eggs and if you want tea - this is the place!
