Intro: I am a tree-loving/planting/researching gal trying to bask in the woods endlessly. I live in Oakland working for non-profit planting trees in San Francisco. I love my cats, alcohol ink painting, yoga, and Ethiopian food.
My friend and I went to get away from town for a little bit and had a truly lovely time. Our campsite was 1 among 6 on a hillside overlooking the valley. Only 3 other groups were there that weekend, giving us plenty of space to move around. The site was great with a fully stocked outdoor kitchen and a outhouse near the campsites. It was a hot weekend but our site had a tree overshadowing a section so we could get away from the heat. Brenda was so nice and accommodating. She was kind enough to point us in the direction of some swimming holes nearby to cool down in. Easily the best part was the night sky. Between the new Moon and there being very little light pollution I saw more stars than I’ve ever seen in my life. We could see the Milky Way both nights. On our way out we swing by panda shop and purchase some lovely goods such as tea and tinctures. Truly a great trip. Thanks Brenda!
We truly had a great and peaceful stay at Brandyland. John was very kind and helpful. He met us at the site and showed us around. Since we were one of the first arriving for the weekend, we had free pick of our site. We chose the Oak Site since it was nestled away under a beautiful oak tree. The campsite as a whole is well-stocked but minimal in the sense that you still felt like you were still on a proper camping trip. The outdoor kitchen was super useful. John has constructed various distribution sources for potable spring water (major bonus for me). He also provided the camp with a gas fired stove and kitchen sink, which really simplified our food situation. The bathroom was fantastic with an indoor AND outdoor sink as well as a composting toilet and shower. The campsite is very communal, so all amenities are shared with folks from about 10 sites. On our first night we were one of 3 sites filled so it was really chill. The second night a group of 5 and group of 9 showed up (Labor Day weekend), so it was less private but the company was enjoyed. The other campers were friendly and we enjoyed sharing fire & food with new friends. The location is close to Kern River and like 100 hiking trails. We had to drive to visit everything but it was beyond worth it. There is so much to do in the valley! We spent a good amount of time at Brandyland, enjoying its other worldly sights and sounds. My friend and I agreed that we would love to come back. Thank you for sharing your space with us John!
I was in a group of 8 and stayed for Labor day weekend. Parksland Yoga Retreat was honestly exactly what we all needed, we had a lovely time. Here you will find stunning views, swimming holes and creeks, and enjoyable hikes. Dustin was very patient and kind in answering my hundreds of questions. He is really friendly and warm. Dustin and his family & friends built a lovely off the grid home/yoga retreat, including an outdoor shower and pit toilet. I really valued and appreciated the environmental practices exercised here.
When you arrive you park up near his home and hike about 1/8th of a mile (like 300 steps if you are short like me) to the private campsite. Keep in mind, it's a fairly steep incline on the way back up, but that is just motivation to pack light and enjoy the ride. It is absolutely worth it though. Seriously, it's like this place is radiating magic. There is a creek that swings around the site which you can swim in. Dustin provides recycling and a trash can, which is nice. The toilet and shower are up the hill, but do yourself a favor and make the hike. That toilet and shower were highlights of my year. No joke.
The area around the site is good for hiking. Must visit the Blue Hole, which is just down the road (like 1 mile away). It's a great swimming hole with a beach, deep water, and plenty of jumping off points. We had an amazing time at Parksland. Dustin and his friends and family are so nice and friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone.
