We had such a fabulous time camping at Mulln-Heim Vineyards this weekend! John is a warm and welcoming host! He provided us with detailed directions and met us upon arrival. He even looked ahead at the weekend forecast and offered to let us cancel our reservation due to inclement weather an hour before we were due to arrive, but we were excited to camp, rain or shine, and canceling was not on the agenda. The campsite features a grassy meadow next to beautiful rows of grape vines. Nice shade is available around the perimeter. John built an incredibly cushy outhouse and stocked it with little extras campers might forget, including toilet paper, hand sanitizer, bug spray, and lighter fluid to help start a fire on a wet night like we had to do. Nestled underneath maple trees is a small clearing with a fire ring and cooking grate, some nice chairs to sit in, and a sturdy wooden bench and picnic table. John even provided firewood and a 5 gallon dispenser that campers can use to store water if they need it. We had a wonderful time playing Frisbee in the meadow, watching the sunset over the vineyards, and chatting and cooking some great meals over the fire. John checked in on us daily to make sure we had everything we needed and to help us out with directions. We visited St. Joseph, Silver Beach, and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore during our stay. We slso spent a lot of time at the campsite as well and enjoyed every minute. We left with a feeling of deep respect for the way that John is preserving over 30 acres of wilderness on his property while using the 10 acres with good drainage as a vineyard. He is truly a people person who cares deeply about the environment and recycled our plastic, aluminum, and glass so that we did not have to pack it out with us and do it once we got home. Hipcamp is offering John a fiscally and environmentally responsible way to sustain the 30 acres of wilderness he does not want to touch and that has been in his family for years, and we feel happy to have supported him in that effort. His campsite is so wonderfully private, and it was absolutely amazing to have time with family and friends without having to worry about the usual issues that crop up when we stay in a more traditional campground that packs everybody in right next to each other. We had 7 adults, two small children, and a dog with us, and everyone felt free to explore and enjoy the beautiful surroundings in safety and privacy. This was our first Hipcamp experience, and we will definitely be repeat Hipcampers—John is an awesome ambassador! Not only do we plan to visit John again, hopefully during maple syrup time in the spring, but we are excited to try out Hipcamp sites in other areas as well. Thanks, John, for a stellar stay at your awesome vineyard!!
