Murray Grove is the historic site of the first Universalist sermon preached in America in 1770. John Murray, a European minister traveling by ship on his way to Boston, ran aground in the Barnegat Bay off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. He made his way onto the property of a local farmer, Thomas Potter (our property, now known as Murray Grove Retreat & Renewal Center). More than a decade before, Potter had had a premonition of such a minister, and after two weeks of debate, convinced Murray to preach about Universalism in the United States at the church Potter built 10 years prior. That sermon began the Universalist movement in America with the then radical notion that God is love.
