Heed the warning about wind at this site. There is NO shelter from the wind. I checked the weather report before arriving, it was 5 MPH in Bodega Bay; at Sunset Site it was so windy my tent collapsed whenever I tried to put on the fly, and was bending in the wind without the fly. Turns out the wind whips up the hills and accelerates? Nearby campsites in the hills fared better with shelter from large rocks, and it was pleasantly breezy at the lower campsites down in the trees. The setting was gorgeous, the layout nice and the host organized and friendly; but finally after the wind bent a tent pole, I packed up and left before sunset. I'd go back to a different site at Chanslor Ranch, but Sunset Site can have serious wind even when it's mild wind in other areas.
I had a wonderful overnight in the larger of the two cabins. I arrived later in the afternoon after Lis had left for the evening, but the directions and instructions she left were excellent and I had no problem finding my way around. The cabins are very close to the water in a quiet little area at the bottom of a hill. The cabin itself had a very comfortable bed, electricity, a table and chairs, a heater, and they had left me water, tea and an electric kettle. The heater kept the cabin cozy all night as temperatures dropped (mid-December). The bathroom/kitchen building and parking area are at the top of the hill near the main house, not a far distance but be aware it's a big climb. I traveled with my dog, there was no problem having her. I had a peaceful trip and would go back in any season.
We had a wonderful time saying in the Vista History Garden Yurt. We honestly only needed food, clothing and personal flashlights, everything else was provided (including bug spray, which was essential for mosquitoes at dusk.) The bed was comfortable and bedding provided was plenty warm enough to stay cozy in 50F nighttime weather. Myrna was an amazing and friendly host. The campsite was lovely, the view spectacular, and the night was quiet and peaceful. The Preserve is not huge, but it was fun to explore the many paths, great vistas and accessible historic sites all day with our dog. Would definitely recommend this gem.
