Another great stay in the Holy Cross Hut! We backpacked in the 8.5 mile route (Missouri Lakes to Fancy Pass) and absolutely loved it. There's no bad route into this spot! It was so nice having a cozy cabin and bed to sleep in after an exhausting day. We'll definitely be back!
High Alpine Camping Experience
in Holy Cross Refugio Tent Sites and Cabin, Colorado
Another great trip to this alpine hut! This was our first time pitching tents near the hut and it was very convenient. Two of us slept in the hut, two in tents. Plenty of tree cover and softer mossy ground. Will definitely be back!
It's hard to know where to begin with how incredible this place is. We were only able to stay one night and I was so sad to leave! This site is a permaculture based farm that hosts interns from every corner of the world. The crew that was there to greet us (preparing for students to arrive in a few short weeks) was so incredibly inviting and fun to be around. You are just a short distance from the adorable town of Honakaa and there are endless activities and sites to see in this area. We were asked to park at the entrance to the farm which is just a short distance walk up to the main property. There were ADORABLE grazing goats at the entrance that we had a really hard time leaving alone. They loved to be loved!
The grounds themselves are SO gorgeous. We were lucky enough to get a tour from one of the seasonal volunteers who educated us on permaculture farming and sustainability practices. We got a few insider tips on what the next "kale" will be! We even got to enjoy a plate of edible plants that we picked on our tour.
We were incredibly comfortable in our Cabana. It was clean and even had an air mattress! Our sleeping bags and pillows were barely needed. The Cabanas are screened so you can fall asleep peacefully listening to incredible jungle sounds all night.
There is a covered deck and kitchen area that has a cooking stove, utensils, coffee maker and really anything you may need to cook up your own food. Just next to the kitchen area is an adorable building that has showers and sinks for cleaning up. My shower was hot! The composting toilets on site were also very clean and comfortable to use.
Do yourself a favor and stay at the Banana Cabanas! You will not regret it. I truly hope to return someday.
Wow, where to even begin with how incredible this Hipcamp experience was. Jake and his entire family were so kind and inviting and went above and beyond to make our stay unique and memorable. The cabins on Jake's property are all so unique, hand crafted and cozy beyond belief. Warm by the fire place inside or the fire pit outside to wind down for the evening. We were lucky enough to be taken horse back riding in the hills near the property and it was such a blast. While outside, you'll find yourself surrounded by chickens, goats, horses, cats and puppies that certainly provide some entertainment! The hospitality we experienced even went a step further when we were greeted with a delicious homemade breakfast the next morning. This property is very easy to get to and you even get to drive through Colorado National Monument which is an added bonus. A truly remarkable experience, we're already plotting our return.
We had such a fun time at the Bus House Hostel! It was within 15 minutes of Taos and some nearby hot springs that we wanted to check out. The buses were very easy to find even in the dark - Rachel gave us great directions! The accommodations are very rustic so be sure to bring all the essentials you'll need with you. That includes firewood, food, stove, sleeping bags, water, etc. There is an outhouse on the property which was awesome! We slept 4 people and a dog in the "pink" bus and two of us needed to use sleeping pads so don't leave those behind either if you have a bigger group. You have a great view of the mountains from the buses so we enjoyed walking around the property at sunset, soaking it all in. We cooked breakfast in the "courtyard" in the morning while the sun came up - it was wonderful!
My trip to Caribou Hut was quite the adventure! I visited the hut with a friend and two dogs. If you're making the trip in the winter, I'd highly recommend snowshoes as it's a 1.5 mile hike in from the closed Forest Service road and the snow got very deep. The cabin is very rustic so we were glad to have packed in everything we needed (sleeping pads, bags, cooking utensils, etc). There is a propane stove but we ended up cooking our tinfoil meals right on top of the small wood stove. There was some wood underneath the cabin that we burned but I'd suggest being prepared to forage for more or pack in a bundle or two. There are two lofts that you could sleep in but we ended up making our beds next to the wood stove so the pups could sleep next to us. The hike in/out was really beautiful and we enjoyed pizza and beer in Nederland before our hike in! We encountered several backcountry skiers that were also using the beginning part of the trail. Would definitely recommend staying at the Caribou Hut if you're comfortable with a someone strenuous hike (in the winter) and rustic accommodations! We'll certainly be back.
My friend and I had a wonderful time at Rocky Mountain High Camping! Very accessible while also feeling secluded. The site is just a short drive from Winter Park/Fraser where we enjoyed a lovely brunch at Sharky's before heading to the site. There were two huts and plenty of space for a tent or two. The hosts made up one of the huts for us that had a queen bed which was perfectly cozy for a chilly night! You're situated right along Vasquez Creek so we had a great time relaxing by the water and listening to the stream throughout our stay. There are three fire pits, one closer to the water and two others situated just outside of each hut. We spent the evening down by the water and then made a fire closer to our hut for breakfast. We packed in all our firewood, campfire food, sleeping bags, pillows, etc. The pups also had a wonderful time! Would highly recommend staying at Rocky Mountain High Camping!
Wow, what a beautiful area and piece of property! My friend and I (and two pups) had a fantastic stay. The views are absolutely amazing and we felt totally secluded. The last bit of the road is a little rough but we had no problem even with one lower clearance vehicle. We setup camp not too far off of the road so you could walk in if needed. There are several fire rings setup and ready for use! Communication with Eric was also a breeze. Would highly recommend this slice of heaven to anyone looking to get away from it all!
Wow, what an amazing piece of property! We absolutely LOVED our adventure at Glacier Mountain Camp. Total seclusion and incredible views. The road was a bit technical so a higher clearance vehicle is definitely recommended! We got in just fine with an Xterra and Grand Cherokee. There are two fire pits on the property and plenty of space for tents. Would highly recommend this beautiful piece of land to anyone looking for a memorable Colorado experience. And bring the pups! Endless space for dogs to run wild. Will definitely be back!
My friend and I (and our pups) had a lovely stay at Gould Getaway! The camper is tucked away in the woods behind a private gate off a county road so you definitely feel secluded. This area of Colorado is beautiful and there is plenty to explore! Even just walking around the property with our coffee in the morning was quite enjoyable with mountain views in every direction. Our dogs equally had a great time! Jenifer asked that they remain leashed on her land due to wildlife and livestock which was no problem at all as there was plenty of space to walk them around. The camper is very cozy and has all of the essentials you'll need. There is a picnic table outside that was great for meal prep and enjoying some wine in the great outdoors. Jenifer was a wonderful host! She met us shortly after arriving and walked us through how to use the electricity, water, heat, etc. in the camper. She was very helpful with providing suggestions on what to do in the area. She also wrote a book of poetry while rafting down the Grand Canyon which she was gracious enough to share with us - a wonderful writer! I would definitely suggest staying at Gould Getaway. I certainly hope to return one day!
I absolutely loved my stay at Kenosha Pass Yurt! I drove up from Denver with my dog after work and still had plenty of day light. The yurt isn't actually that far off the highway and is very accessible, yet you still feel very secluded. It was just a short walk in from where we had to park. There is a campground (and dispersed camping I believe) nearby but I didn't run into anyone nor can you see people from the yurt. The surrounding area is beautiful! Loaded with aspens and also a nice big open field with amazing mountain views. The yurt itself was so cozy, clean and adorable and the bed was insanely comfortable with a nice big warm comforter. Also, the fire pit right outside made for a wonderful way to end my evening. Cynthia's communication was outstanding! She prepped me for exactly what I would need to bring and provided very detailed (and very accurate) directions on how to get to the yurt. I highly recommend this wonderful getaway and I certainly hope to be back someday!
Wow - what an adventure! Absolutely loved our stay at the cabin. My friend and I (and two dogs) backpacked in about 2.5 miles to get to the cabin. You would need a serious off-roading rig to get the entire way. The Holy Cross Wilderness contains some absolutely beautiful back country and the entire journey is worth every step. The cabin is cozy and situated just above Holy Cross City with gorgeous mountain views as far as the eye can see. The fire pit on the ledge just outside the cabin was a perfect place to relax and wind down for the day. Endless exploration in this area! Will definitely be back.
