Leaving aerospace cubicles and city-living behind, James and Linda moved to the high desert of Southeast Utah in 1998 seeking a life that would bring us closer to our spiritual realities. Neither of us had connections out here, but James was often in Moab for mountain biking during in the late 1980's while he studied engineering at Northern Arizona University. Shortly after our marriage in the Seattle area in 1996, James brought Linda out here for a visit, and she fell in love with it. In 1998 we moved out here from the east coast in a small school bus and purchased land in La Sal. At that point we were living in 1970 Travco motorhome. The next ten years was spent in the back-breaking work of building a house and working to finance the building. The first four years of building were done with power from the six solar panels mounted on the Travco, using one power tool at a time. We scrounged materials from deserted mines and homesteads, and our house is a fine mix of old and new.
Though time was no longer available for mountain biking, James became a back-country 4X4 guide in the National Parks, and explored the public lands far and wide on motorcycle for both work and pleasure. He discovered the joy of river-running, floating the four major rivers in the area whenever time allowed. Linda worked for Canyonlands Natural History Association in the various National Park visitor centers and the Moab Information Center. Now semi-retired, we have developed the Adventure Haven for visitors who want to relax in cool high desert quiet after a day of adventure.
Our La Sal location is central to the best of the red rock country of Southeast Utah as well as the alpine environment of Southwestern Colorado, and it has been our delight to see as much of both as possible. We have become area experts by default, and delight in sharing our extensive knowledge with visitors.
