First things first - My family and I had a wonderful time at Camp Moonshadow! For us, it was a one day stop on an epic road trip around Lake Michigan, but for others it is a destination all by itself.
For the weary traveler, Camp Moonshadow has it all. Take a warm shower inside the shower house or outside, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. For those traveling to Camp Moonshadow as a destination, you can leave most of your camp supplies at home and travel easy thanks to the camp's fully outfitted outdoor kitchen. Complete with a working stove, a coffee maker, a sink, mini fridge and more, you can cook a gourmet meal for your crew in the outdoor kitchen any time of day, even in the rain. Just be sure to keep it clean for your fellow campers to enjoy as well.
The provided directions to Camp Moonshadow are easy to understand and brought us right to camp. Once at camp the signs and instructions are clear, visible, and easy to understand.
When we arrived we were treated to a happy hour in the communal dining area - wine, cheese and crackers, as well as snacks for the kids. The kids happily filled the provided utility wagon with our gear and pulled it up the small hill to our campsite before playing soccer as the sunset in the nearby mowed field. As the adults got dinner ready in the amazing outdoor kitchen, the kids used the wagon to collect kindling to add to the communal kindling pile next to the fire pit and after dinner we enjoyed a roaring campfire before tucking in for the night.
Our hosts were available to chat and answer any questions we had. We highly recommend a quick stop at Camp Moonshadow or a multi-day trip. While there, be sure to head over to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for a view of Lake Michigan you'll not soon forget.
Barely over an hour from the Twin Cities, Silver Creek Springs' Bicycle Retreat is a must visit spot and we will be back ASAP. We loaded up and headed to Silver Creek, the first stop on an epic road trip and were happy for the short drive to start us out. The directions were perfect and we arrived without any trouble. We were greeted at the on-site bicycle shop and treated a tour of the property. As soon the car stopped the kids jumped out and started exploring. There is certainly no shortage of nooks to explore.
There are three campsites and we nabbed a spot right next to the property owner's home, in reach of the wifi, which was a wonderful perk for us work-on-the-road types. Along with a quick tour, we were also provided some information of the surrounding area. We were also gifted a homemade healing salve, made from ingredients grown right at Silver Creek, as well as a dozen fresh eggs from the chickens peering at us from their coop.
The afternoon was filled with exploring the nearby mowed trails in the prairie, splashing in the creek, hanging out with the resident cats and dogs, feeding the chickens, goofing off with the turkeys, and a short paddle on the edge of a nearby town. After rushing back to camp to catch the sunset from atop Casey's Hill, we enjoyed a camp fire with the provided wood and tucked ourselves in. We slept wonderfully.
The following day the kids helped out with chores in the garden and did some more exploring while I took advantage of the wifi and marveled at the most clean and comfortable compost toilet I have ever laid my eyes on.
We highly recommend a visit to the Bicycle Farm at Silver Creek Springs. The host communication, the location, the amenities, and the pleasant company will not disappoint!
