Intro: Moved to the area for grad school, but whenever I get a free second I take off to dance in the woods! Traveling is my kryptonite and the outdoors is a necessity to maintain my sanity- discovering hipcamp makes feeding my adventurous soul so easy!
Wow! Did not expect to stumble across this canyon during our cross-country caravaning voyage. We walked around all day (bring sooooo much water) and saw one of the prettiest sunsets! Later this week we went to see the grand canyon, and though nothing compares to that, this canyon was in no way disappointing- it was very colorful and impressive!
Pretty perfect spot for a classic J Tree, scrambling, climbing sorta stay. Definitely best to go on weekdays to avoid crowds. The atmosphere here among neighboring campers is always incredibly friendly, everyone waves and smiles, probably just due to being overwhelmed by the beauty of this place- a perfect escape from the Bay Area (or any city for that matter).
It can get really chilly and misty here! Best to bring lots of layers and definitely use that tent fly to protect you from waking up covered in dew :) Beauuutiful, magical foresty feel. Best to go on weekdays if possible, campgrounds are rather close to each other. Hiking is ample and has pretty fantastic views if the sky is clear enough.
We stayed at a site near the creek in the forested area. There's lots of wildlife to see in the forest and it's an easy walk to the beach for sunset! We saw many deer at our site and even a whale during sunset! This campground really is a all-in-one for Big Sur. The hike trail was clearly marked. You could wade through crystal clear creeks, which I always enjoy doing in my chacos. The trail was adventurous without being difficult and cleverly made-super enjoyable hike. Of course, the waterfall at the end was wonderfully rewarding as well.
