This place is absolutely magical. I will be back for sure! The host, Ellen, and her six dogs (Tavish and Blanca the collies, Jack the heeler, Clayton the mutt, Wishy the collie/terrier, and Ulva the doberman) were so wonderful. We arrived in the early evening and Ellen and the dogs gave us a general tour of the farm, which had fields of their namesake crop, sage; the main house, the shop, and barn for the two miniature and two full-sized horses (the latter two buildings had flush toilets we were able to use during our stay); and two main campsites that had picnic tables, one by the barn and sage fields at the base of the mountain/hills and one in a clearing near the top of the hills. But like the resident dogs we had free-range of the land and could camp and explore anywhere we wished. The dogs were also super social and friendly with us and my dog, who adored them and the whole experience. After our tour, Wishy led us (literally showed us the way) on a hike up one of the hills to a great sunset-viewing location. On our way down we did have a brief encounter with some border patrol agents who were out looking for someone (we were less than 10 miles from the border), which gave our group a spooky feeling for the night, but the reality is we were totally safe with the dogs watching out for us. The stars at night were unreal - the milky way was the clearest I had ever seen it, and we saw half a dozen shooting stars. In the morning we did more exploring, including finding a cave with hammocks, hiking up to multiple lookout points, and a challenging and fun trail (marked by Ellen's tie dye flags) to the top of the tallest mountain overlooking the property, where we spent some time hanging out and enjoying the view (note that this trail was difficult for a dog as there was a good amount of rock scrambling, and while we did make it up and down without incident, I would not recommend it if you are not comfortable picking up your dog around certain obstacles and/or do not have good voice control over your dog to ensure their and your safety).
Thank you, Ellen, for sharing your property with us. Even in one night the sense of purity and freedom this place has soothed our souls. I cannot recommend Sagewinds highly enough!
