Check-in was flexible and easy once I located the Hipcamp confirmation number. Checkout was equally flexible. We didn't use the facilities much, but appreciated the option. Area was well-maintained and clean. The top of the ridge was busy, but we enjoyed the privacy of the lower portion of the campground, near the stream (road down is to the left right after you pass through the Welcome Climbers sign). We'll be back!
This is a great place for the right person/group, but wasn't quite what we were hoping for.
--Hosts were wonderfully responsive and laid back.
--Location is great for exploring the Hocking Hills region.
--LOTS of space for camping. NOT a noisy, cramped campground.
--Could accommodate a very large group indeed.
--Tons of flexibility on use of the space.
--Free tap water at the hosts' nearby house.
--Free wood if you're willing to cut/use old branches, downed trees, etc.
Things to be aware of (could be CONS for you):
--Not sure what the "bathe in stream" part of the listing is referring to. There's a small stream, but it is very shallow, full of silt, and we suspected had a lot of agricultural runoff.
--Although parts are forested, they can be very difficult to access during the summer because of the very dense undergrowth.
--The mowed strip around the field is fine for a high-profile SUV, but not a good fit for a standard-profile car. In wet weather, I would worry about getting out of there without a higher-profile 4WD vehicle.
The reason this didn't quite work for us is that we were looking for a bit of a "unicorn," camping-wise, in which my sons could build a crude shelter while I set up a tent nearby for my use and backup for them. We thought this place would work well -- and indeed the hosts would have been totally fine with that -- but forest areas near the fields were impassibly dense.
