This was a wonderful place to stop on our drive from DC to Austin! The campsite and surrounding land were simply gorgeous, and the nearby lake (about 5 minutes walk to Bennet Cove was warm upon entry with cold currents below and a great place to relax. This small cove is tucked with a small, rocky beach, and shady nook where you can hang a hammock and have a beautiful lake vista in the shade while others swim in the water or enjoy the sun in either the rocky or sandy area! There was also a fire ring there for lakeside smores!
The campsite is accessed conveniently off route 70 and tucked in the woods behind Charles' homestead which consists of his home, chicken coop with free range black as night chickens, chicks, and roosters, garden, as well as a vintage 1960's stlye motel (no longer in use) but formerly the Fin and Feather motel. A very cool welcome as you turn in. Wind around into the woods and park right near the campsite. The campsite has a fire ring, table and chairs, and very private. Easy walk to the meadow area where there is a clearing with potable water.
Charles was such a great host, a genuine and earnest host who is kind and accommodating. He provided wood for the campfire and we texted him asking if he had any ice and he very kindly assisted with 2 frozen containers of ice - saved our food source! He also provide a spot where we could charge our phones. He was able to help us out with lending some supplies for a repair we needed to make on our camper (we ended up being pretty needy, but he never once made us feel we were bothering him). Charles showed us chicks that had just hatched that day--in fact, the chickens in general are quite beautiful! The campsite was a very cozy spot and had an abundance of both sun and shade, it also felt very tucked away while also easily walkable to trails, the lake, and the pottable water source.
Steve, this place is magical. Wonderful to see how your artisan's creativity is woven into the natural landscape. The river was serene and teeming with fish. (A more able fisherman than myself would have gotten many a hit ,-) ...swimming, kayaking, canoeing, we did it all! And so close to DC... what a gem at the Shenandoah bends!
Cant wait to tell our friends and looking forward to doing this again in the future...
