After a full day exploring Portland’s shops, breweries, and beaches, we took a quick drive up to Pownal, not knowing what to expect from our first Maine hipcamp experience. From the moment we pulled up onto the dirt road leading to Sue and Holly’s farm, we knew we were in for a treat. A few curious chickens greeted us as we pulled off the road into the farm, followed by a very friendly collie. In the distance, Holly and Sue were sitting by the fire waiting for us. Holly came to greet us and give us a tour of their beautiful organic farm. The majestic highland cattle, the greenhouses full of flowers and produce, ready to bloom, the unbearably cute mulefoot hogs burrowing in fresh mud, acres of woodlands at your back, chickens wandering free. Holly and Sue were delightful. We sat by the fire, exchanging stories and learning about the many plants and animals they tend to, before cozying up in our tent to sleep. Our only regret is that we could only spend one night camping out on their lovely farm. I hope every host is as gracious and welcoming as Sue and Holly are. We highly recommend you plan your next camp out here!
This location was very close to the beach, which was perfect for us. The site had a pool too. The only problem was the train. We were warned it would be loud, but that it didn't run from 11pm - 6am. However, at 2:30am the loudest train came by and a few more kept coming. I'm not sure if that is normal, but it was impossible to sleep through the night. If it weren't for that, the site would have been great.
My partner and I spent two weeks traveling around California staying in different places each night and this was by far our favorite place. Such a beautiful site! Every detail was perfect. Thank you so much for making this a lovely stay for us.
