Located near Kalapana, this is the perfect place to pitch a tent. Tracy, the host, has built a lovely home away from home on his land. There is a platform for your tent, a fire pit, a propane bbq, flushable toilet and a serene and private outdoor shower.
There are so many trees to pick fruit from: noni, papayas, bananas, mangos and coconuts! There is even a little sour sap tree grove. Tracy is a landscape designer so you can imagine how much care, intent and thought he put in behind every plant.
Down the road, there is Uncle Robert's Awa Bar where you can grab a drink and dinner. There is also a great Farmer's Market every Wednesday night and a LIVE MUSIC! There is also a corner store where you can get many food staples to cook.
Across the way there is a lava sand beach, which is a short walk to the coast. What is really spectacular is to drive to the lava viewing area in Kalapana. You'll park in a designated parking lot and can either get a shuttle or ride a bike to the lava. Best to go at night and see all the stars and the giant sky. You'll be able to see live lava.
Issac Hale Beach Park is just 25 min drive away as well so there are so many activities to choose from. Tracy was so accommodating and friendly, cannot wait to visit again!

You'll arrive and never want to leave. Michelle is the sweetest host with the warmest energy. She has built this beautiful pocket on the east coast of the big island. Sunrise Hale is one of the one bedroom structures on the property and you can conveniently drive your car right up to it. The porch has two perfect reading chairs and the bed is SO comfortable. There are shelves and dressers to make you feel right at home and the flushing toilet and hot shower are a short walk away. The communal outdoor kitchen has a fridge and freezer and they are ample bananas to enjoy. The care and intention put into this property is felt everywhere. From the coconut and banana trees to the massive 100 year old mango trees, there is truly something special on the land.
Everything is clean and comfortable. We stayed for 2 nights and wished for more. There is an natural ocean rock pool called Mermaid Pond just a 5-10 min drive + 15 min walk down the road and Pahoa is about 20 mins away.
I'll definitely be back when I visit the big island.

Mendocino Grove is such a beautiful coastal gem! The property is well maintained, has incredible facilities (hot water showers + bathrooms with hand towels), and is tucked within many redwood trees. The Pitch-Your-Own-Tent section is located beyond the center meadow. The property is drivable and there is a bulletin board near the main bathrooms that greet you on arrival with your reservation and map.

The Pitch your own tent area is on the smaller side so one tent can comfortably fit in each of the 4 sites. Each has a fireplace and grill as well as a picnic table. There is ample firewood throughout the property so you can keep you fire burning all night long. The campsites were also covered with hay so the ground was super soft to sleep on. Bathrooms and showers (both indoor and outdoor) are within walking distance.

There is also a short walking trail next to the area. We woke up to a communal breakfast being offered (yogurt, bars and clementines) with coffee, hot tea, and hot chocolate as well!

The other areas on the property have canvas tents and airstreams! SO COOL.

There is a beach down highway 1 that many people bonfire at. It was such a beautiful weekend, Mendocino is magic. I will definitely be back again!

You can also rent these out! They are super cozy with a bed! Not in the pitch your own tent area - but are available to reserve on the property.

Tucked in the hills near Pescadero, this property is a hillside retreat. The campsites are fairly small and can only fit one tent in each but they provide an intimate space for cooking, fires, and great conversations. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly, greeting us in matching overalls and smiles. From 2-6pm, the hosts are happy to help load your things on their 4x4 and drive it up to your campsite for you. This was helpful as it's a short uphill climb. There are two toilets and one hot water shower on the property. All are beautifully built and kept really clean! Everything on the property is solar powered and firewood is provided at each campsite! We had such a peaceful stay and was hard to believe we were only an hour an a half from San Francisco. Hope to be back really soon.

Such a lovely oasis just 1.5 hours away from SF. Kim was so friendly and accommodating and all of her animals on the farm were delightful to see, hear, and be around. The cabin is very cozy and the bed is really comfortable! Her baby lambs were the cutest. Kim made us breakfast in the morning and it was such a beautiful day to eat in the yard. Highly recommend for a quick getaway that feels far away from city life but easily accessible. Hiking Harvey Bear Park (10-15 mins away) is a plus as well!
