Where do I start.... this is a long review but if you have little kids and want to know how nice Chris and Terri are, please read on!
First, the road was scary but fun! If you don’t have an all wheel drive, might be a huge challenge since the last mile to the upper falls area was very steep. I drive an AWD Toyota Sienna and it didn’t have any issues going up. I have a hitch installled so it made my clearance lower and kept hitting the ground. But, it also saved my rear bumper.
Second, if you have little kids and it’s your first time to camp, I wouldn’t recommend the upper falls tent. Call Terri and ask for one of the cabins. The cabin reservation on hip camp site have all the dates blocked out for some reason. I met Chris, Terri’s husband and mentioned that I couldn’t get the cabins reserved. He mentioned that there’s supposedly something wrong with the site and that to call his wife Terri next time that we need the cabin.
Third, here’s the interesting part. I booked the tent up in the upper falls. I have three daughters 18, 11 and 8. I have never taken them out camping so I thought this might be a good experience for my family. Took the death defying road challenge but when we got to the site, we realized that my kids cannot access the bottom of the waterfall. It only had a trail to the top side. But adults shouldn’t have any issues climbing down. That was our full intent of this trip. To go camping and play in the river.
We gathered around and had a little impromptu meeting. Everyone voted to just move out and camp by the Whiskeytown Lake. By now, we’ve been on the road for almost 24 hours to get where we were at. That’s not all driving though. We had a lot of stops on our way. No harm no foul. We read the reviews on hip camp and took the risk. When we got there the risk outweighed the benefit so that was all on us.
As we crossed the bridge by the middle cabin. Chris was there and we stopped. Didn’t realize he was the owner at first. Thought he was just renting the cabin. . We had a little chat. We spoke about how nice the the place is but the kids just won’t able to enjoy it as much as we expected. That it wasn’t a big deal for us to just leave. Next thing you know, he said he was the owner and offered the middle cabin to us since there wasn’t anyone occupying it for two nights. We were like whaaatttt? Even one of my daughters mentioned she hasn’t met a person that generous ever! Other than me of course! We took Chris’ offer, enjoyed the cabin, had fun in the river and really appreciated that Chris and Terri share their little paradise. My wife enjoyed how peaceful the place is. My kids Loved the river and the butterflies. I enjoyed the isolation of the place. My family really had a great time! Hope yours will too!
