"owl" be back 💫
The drive to Owl Hollow was possibly one of the more beautiful drives we’ve taken. The rolling hills are full of cedar trees and cacti, and the view is clear for miles. Owl Hollow is located down a windy road where the only traffic is from people who live further down - which isn’t much. This hipcamp location is not hard to spot in the daylight. Two shipping containers sit on the edge of the front lawn; the one closest to the road is adorned with a brightly colored owl mural. We were able to pull our bus up on the grass next to the mural. Although we love tent camping when it is warm outside, the chill of January prevented us from setting up in the many different spaces available on the backside of Mary Lou’s property.
There is absolutely no light pollution aside from the light illuminating the area around the bathroom; this is not visible on the backside of the property at night at all, but casts more toward the driveway and front of the property. This makes Owl Hollow a great hipcamp for stargazing on clear nights. Tubes are provided for a float down the river nearby in warmer months (we plan on returning when the weather is better to take advantage of that). With not much human or car traffic, the bunnies and deer we saw seemed to enjoy moving at their own pace.
A decent size communal fire pit is located in the back between the main house and the tent camping areas. When a fire ban isn’t in effect, hipcampers are welcome to have fires and firewood is provided. We were able to have fires for two of our three day stay, which was great since we don’t have a kitchen finished in our bus yet and all our meals are cooked over a fire :).
Mary Lou was extremely responsive and communicative before, during, and after our stay. She was super helpful when we couldn’t find her neighbor who sells free range eggs when available (they were delicious!). There’s wifi if you need it and two full bathrooms with toilets and hot showers. No toilet paper goes in the toilet, so a wastebasket is provided. You can find some basic toiletries in each of the baths - shampoo, body wash, hand soap. We were amazed to find an outdoor sink for washing dishes (with hot water!) and some dish soap in the bathroom.
We enjoyed the quiet solitude and peacefulness of this land, and really look forward to returning in warmer months. (:

We had a great time thanks to our camp hosts Mary Lou and Oscar! They made sure all of our needs were met and even drove us to the perfect spot on the river so that our dogs and little girl could play.
The bathrooms and showers were a great luxary!
Wonderful family vacation spot!
This was the perfect vacation spot for our family! Mary and her husband were excellent hosts and made sure we had access to everything we needed to have a fun and relaxing vacation! The bathroom and shower were excellent and very clean. The picnic area was so nice, especially when lit up with the lights at night. When tucked back in the trees at night at our campsite we had a beautiful view of the stars and it was peaceful. We had the opportunity to see deer, lots of birds and squirrels, and even a roadrunner! Mary and Oscar were kind enough to make us coffee in the morning and made some wonderful stirfry one night for us. We definitely felt like welcomed guests. A great camping experience while still having access to some amenities, which was perfect for camping with young children! We will definitely be back again!
Fantastic! superb! 10/10 !!!!!
As a single woman traveling in a new area from the minute I arrived I felt welcomed and secure. Hosts MaryLou and Oscar treated me like a long lost friend - all the while giving me space, but reeling this California girl in at 1 in the morning out of a wild and wooly (at least for this first timer here) thunder and lighting storm. 10 minutes from town and yet country enough to have no light pollution. Outstanding amenities - Covid19 standards top notch, hot water and sparkling bathroom facilities, even a washer and drier! MaryLou has some great suggestions of local things to do - the river spot was a HIT! I was able to keep my social distancing at the river even though it was Memorial Day Monday. Woke up every morning to birdsong and went to sleep to a night filled with stars. Oscar helped me with my air mattress and insisted on loaning me a flashlight when he saw all I was using was my phone. I couldn’t have asked for a kinder, engaging, funny, great conversationalists than this couple. I feel like I now have new chosen family in Texas! The camp sites are great and give sufficient privacy. Got to see deer, road runners, a curious fox and all the wild flowers sorting the property were so pretty.
Owl hollows eve
Although we never had the pleasure of meeting the host, Mary Lou, she was very responsive to our messages and helpful with any questions we had.
When arriving at Owl Hollow, make sure you follow the hosts instructions as Google Maps will not take you to the correct location.
When you arrive you’ll see a yellow house as well as a storage container with a cool mural on it.
After getting settled in, our dog explored the land with us, playing fetch with sticks as we walked. There are many nice tent spots in the back, but we stuck to the front yard since we’re traveling in a large van. We enjoyed the many hang-out areas in Owl Hollow, our favorite being the small patio next to the blue shed.
The communal bathroom is decorated with a collection of vintage beer signs. We enjoyed seeing the hosts personality come through in the art around the property. We had a bit of trouble with one toilet but overall the bathrooms were great. The shower stayed hot and the sink outside the bathroom was great for doing dishes.
It wasn’t warm enough for tubing, but we did walk down the street to Flying Armadillo Disc Golf Club. While staying at Owl Hollow, it’s an absolute must to walk over here! Such an interesting place.
In the morning, we woke up to three deer looking at us and the sound of many birds singing. Such a nice way to start the day!
Great camping near san marcos
This is the perfect camping for anyone who wants to be close to San Marcos or Austin. Mary Lou is a great host, easy to communicate with and friendly. The site is easy to find and easy to pitch a tent anywhere with access to electric, water and bathrooms. We had fun with our kids and friends and loved the area and proximity to San Marcos. Highly recommended. Better than a state park!
Very convenient to San Marcos. Hosts were great . We felt like we were in the country but weren’t really lots of neighbors dogs barking. Beautiful quiet morning . Nice shower and toilet .
All and all good !
