Owl Hollows impressive wilderness offers an ideal getaway in a superb setting.  Get reacquainted with your better half, nature, star gaze or gather around the fire pit by yourself with family and or friends!   Owl Hollow has wide-open skies that boast striking sunset views with brilliant streaks of color.   Explore Owl Hollows, 4.98 acres of cedar and oak-covered hill till you find your favorite destination spot.  Park your vehicle in the front designated area in reverse, explore and pitch your tent ⛺️ in your favorite spot.  One vehicle per campsite, there is an extra fee per extra vehicle(s) Whether you're traveling solo, with family, friends or your partner, make yourself at home in one of the designated Hipcamp areas.  Owl Hollow Hipcamp offers a fire pit / grill in the communal area or you can bring your own grill.  Remember to bring your own grilling utensils. (If Hays County does not have a BURNBAN you are welcome to use the fire pit). We also have a communal restroom with hot shower (refreshing) and a flushing toilet. There is a sink outside the bathroom to wash your dishes (please use eco-friendly dishwashing liquid), or to fetch water for coffee.  This is well water and believe us, it is cool, refreshing and great tasting!   You can also ride your bike down the street thru the winding hill all the way to the cul-de-sac.   We also have a dog run (for whatever type pet you have) in case you want to go to town and leave them at Owl Hollow.  Owl Hollow is in the middle of Texas Hill Country, you make the choice how relaxing or busy you want to be during your stay with us.   One of your many choices is to go swimming or float the Lazy San Marcos River at Rio Vista Park which is 7.6 miles.  Owl Hollow is conveniently located: 40 miles from Austin TX, while San Antonio is 55 miles away.  Texas State University is 7 miles near.  Hiking nearby at Purgatory Creek Natural Area and Spring Lake Preserve.  On Saturdays between 8:30-12:30 there's the farmers market downtown at the Plaza.  Owl Hollow Hipcamp is just a few minutes drive from open-air shopping, the outlets, entertainment, local eateries and activities.    Enjoy a meal at one of our many local eateries or stay in and take advantage of the  COMMUNAL FIRE PIT / GRILL.   (I'll let you know if we have a BURNBAN).  Wrap up your day with your favorite drink and happy grilling;  veggies, hotdogs, hamburgers or whatever pleases your palette.  And for dessert remember the S'MORES.  After you've indulged in a wonderful meal with your partner, family and or friends, immerse yourself with nature while waiting for the beautiful sunsets.  Wait for the deer, rabbits, fox, opossums, raccoons, squirrels and many other critters while you star gaze till you fall into a quiet slumber sleep.  You will awaken refreshed and fully rested with the morning doves ready for the new days  activities! Owl Hollow’s policy is: LEAVE OWL HOLLOW AS YOU FOUND IT OR BETTER!  (Take your trash, cigarette butts, bottle tops with you!)    We’ve pruned the landscape  a bit and cleared some areas, but we think we’ve left plenty of wildness for you to reconnect with nature and nurture your soul.  Create your dream trip for a weekend, holiday trip or during the week and visit us at Owl Hollow Hipcamp.  We would love to host you. PLEASE LEAVE OWL HOLLOW THE WAY YOU FOUND or BETTER!  We are a pet eco friendly camp, you need to PICK UP YOUR PETS POOP.    No trash bins/pack it and take it with you. Thank you, Oscar and Mary Lou

The drive to Owl Hollow was possibly one of the more beautiful drives we’ve taken. The rolling hills are full of cedar trees and cacti, and the view is clear for miles. Owl Hollow is located down a windy road where the only traffic is from people who live further down - which isn’t much. This hipcamp location is not hard to spot in the daylight. Two shipping containers sit on the edge of the front lawn; the one closest to the road is adorned with a brightly colored owl mural. We were able to pull our bus up on the grass next to the mural. Although we love tent camping when it is warm outside, the chill of January prevented us from setting up in the many different spaces available on the backside of Mary Lou’s property.

There is absolutely no light pollution aside from the light illuminating the area around the bathroom; this is not visible on the backside of the property at night at all, but casts more toward the driveway and front of the property. This makes Owl Hollow a great hipcamp for stargazing on clear nights. Tubes are provided for a float down the river nearby in warmer months (we plan on returning when the weather is better to take advantage of that). With not much human or car traffic, the bunnies and deer we saw seemed to enjoy moving at their own pace.

A decent size communal fire pit is located in the back between the main house and the tent camping areas. When a fire ban isn’t in effect, hipcampers are welcome to have fires and firewood is provided. We were able to have fires for two of our three day stay, which was great since we don’t have a kitchen finished in our bus yet and all our meals are cooked over a fire :).

Mary Lou was extremely responsive and communicative before, during, and after our stay. She was super helpful when we couldn’t find her neighbor who sells free range eggs when available (they were delicious!). There’s wifi if you need it and two full bathrooms with toilets and hot showers. No toilet paper goes in the toilet, so a wastebasket is provided. You can find some basic toiletries in each of the baths - shampoo, body wash, hand soap. We were amazed to find an outdoor sink for washing dishes (with hot water!) and some dish soap in the bathroom.

We enjoyed the quiet solitude and peacefulness of this land, and really look forward to returning in warmer months. (:

It was a pleasure hosting Starla and the girls. I recommend them to all Hipcamps. They left Owl Hollow like they found it, clean. Even though we didn't meet face to face, we were only a text away. Hope to see you again soon. Mary Lou & Oscar Owl Hollow

We had a great time thanks to our camp hosts Mary Lou and Oscar! They made sure all of our needs were met and even drove us to the perfect spot on the river so that our dogs and little girl could play.

The bathrooms and showers were a great luxary!

This was the perfect vacation spot for our family! Mary and her husband were excellent hosts and made sure we had access to everything we needed to have a fun and relaxing vacation! The bathroom and shower were excellent and very clean. The picnic area was so nice, especially when lit up with the lights at night. When tucked back in the trees at night at our campsite we had a beautiful view of the stars and it was peaceful. We had the opportunity to see deer, lots of birds and squirrels, and even a roadrunner! Mary and Oscar were kind enough to make us coffee in the morning and made some wonderful stirfry one night for us. We definitely felt like welcomed guests. A great camping experience while still having access to some amenities, which was perfect for camping with young children! We will definitely be back again!

As a single woman traveling in a new area from the minute I arrived I felt welcomed and secure. Hosts MaryLou and Oscar treated me like a long lost friend - all the while giving me space, but reeling this California girl in at 1 in the morning out of a wild and wooly (at least for this first timer here) thunder and lighting storm. 10 minutes from town and yet country enough to have no light pollution. Outstanding amenities - Covid19 standards top notch, hot water and sparkling bathroom facilities, even a washer and drier! MaryLou has some great suggestions of local things to do - the river spot was a HIT! I was able to keep my social distancing at the river even though it was Memorial Day Monday. Woke up every morning to birdsong and went to sleep to a night filled with stars. Oscar helped me with my air mattress and insisted on loaning me a flashlight when he saw all I was using was my phone. I couldn’t have asked for a kinder, engaging, funny, great conversationalists than this couple. I feel like I now have new chosen family in Texas! The camp sites are great and give sufficient privacy. Got to see deer, road runners, a curious fox and all the wild flowers sorting the property were so pretty.

Night time cactus picCould keep myself out of the water. Refreshingly cold - stay in for hours. As Mary where you can rent tubes to float down the river. Walking to my spot in the middle of the night

Although we never had the pleasure of meeting the host, Mary Lou, she was very responsive to our messages and helpful with any questions we had.

When arriving at Owl Hollow, make sure you follow the hosts instructions as Google Maps will not take you to the correct location.

When you arrive you’ll see a yellow house as well as a storage container with a cool mural on it.

After getting settled in, our dog explored the land with us, playing fetch with sticks as we walked. There are many nice tent spots in the back, but we stuck to the front yard since we’re traveling in a large van. We enjoyed the many hang-out areas in Owl Hollow, our favorite being the small patio next to the blue shed.

The communal bathroom is decorated with a collection of vintage beer signs. We enjoyed seeing the hosts personality come through in the art around the property. We had a bit of trouble with one toilet but overall the bathrooms were great. The shower stayed hot and the sink outside the bathroom was great for doing dishes.

It wasn’t warm enough for tubing, but we did walk down the street to Flying Armadillo Disc Golf Club. While staying at Owl Hollow, it’s an absolute must to walk over here! Such an interesting place.

In the morning, we woke up to three deer looking at us and the sound of many birds singing. Such a nice way to start the day!

I’m glad y’all enjoyed your stay here at Owl Hollow. I’m sorry you had issues with the bathroom. There are signs on both bathrooms not to put any toilet paper/sanitary napkins/wipes in the toilet. A plumber came out and found that the problem was too much toilet paper was put in the toilet. After you mentioned you put toilet paper in the toilet I asked you to put a not working sign on it. Thanks for putting the sign up. I hope you enjoyed your stay and will consider staying at Owl Hollow again in the future. Regards Mary

This is the perfect camping for anyone who wants to be close to San Marcos or Austin. Mary Lou is a great host, easy to communicate with and friendly. The site is easy to find and easy to pitch a tent anywhere with access to electric, water and bathrooms. We had fun with our kids and friends and loved the area and proximity to San Marcos. Highly recommended. Better than a state park!
