Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

Total Eclipse Weekend April 2024

It was overall a great experience. There’s lots to explore on the land. I personally felt like it should be a little more maintained for the purpose of business.

River View

Highly recommend

The property at Low Gear Farmstead is impressive and beautiful. Large spread of land that is just lovely. We stayed at the Riverview site. The sites are spread out so there is privacy. Each site has its own compost toilet (Riverview has a terrific view!). It was very quiet and peaceful. Logan was extremely responsive to any questions/concerns we had. And Bjorn came by in the morning to say hello! Would definitely recommend this campsite and would come back again.

Total Eclipse Weekend April 2024

Five stars and a total eclipse

Logan and her family were very accommodating in that we arrived later than expected. Due to cancellations we were graciously upgraded to a premiere site. The camp sites were very well kept and clean and the whole area was very well maintained and beautiful. We enjoyed walks through the pecan orchard to the picturesque river. Logan was a perfect host in being available and visible without being over bearing. Her English muffins and chocolate chip cookies were wonderful for breakfast or snack. The area provided a most beautiful and relaxing atmosphere to observe the total eclipse. We couldn’t have asked for a better area or host.

Perfect camp for all to relax

We loved our perfect camp spot at Low Gear Farmstead. Logan and Gear are attentive, welcoming and gracious hosts. Their son Kestrel is charming and both dogs welcomed our dog for a fun camp experience. Our hosts stopped in to visit and make sure we had everything needed. Logan’s advice for eclipse viewing was right on. She knows her landscape and how the weather behaves. Logan and Gear brought their musical talents to our camp and joined in the music circle. It was a delight.

Best Ever HipCamp

Logan and Guehr have put together our best hipcamp ever. The vibe here is very serene, calm, and the stargazing and eclipse gazing was like nowhere else. They are wonderful hosts the place was clean, quiet, and everything promised and more. We want to return as soon as possible.
