Make a Grand Getaway to Happy Horse! We're a small, quiet, privately owned and operated, totally tidy and safe place to spend quality outdoor time alone or with family and friends. (Please Note: there is no water access from Happy Horse campground, you must leave the site to swim or fish, and there are several places in Bastrop, a 20 min drive away, to enjoy the water) In business since 2001 as a camp for traveling horses and their riders who come to ride just up the road on McKinney Roughs amazing trails, we cleared some sites in our dense woods & opened up to tent & RV campers with no horses just a few years ago. We are located between Austin and Bastrop 4 miles down a quiet dead end road, and only 2 miles from the Pope Bend Trailhead for LCRA's fabulous McKinney Roughs Nature Park and access to the Colorado River. 18 miles of glorious river and highland trails are open to horses, hikers and bicycles now. There is even a zipline! The park also offers several kinds of canoe/rafting/kayak guided packages that put into the Colorado river nearly right behind Happy Horse: contact them for updates on availability. You are encouraged to call the McKinney Roughs Nature Park office to inquire about these options. Sorry to say, there is no private access from their site.
There are also many nature exhibits up at the park's administration building, just a 6 minute drive from Happy Horse. Give the kids a peek into the flora and fauna of the glorious river basin system that we are part of!
We offer 5 large Deep Woods private walk-in tent sites (park 50 yds away & haul your gear down wooded trails in our garden wagons!) All campsites will accommodate 4-6 people each. #1 and #5 can accommodate up to 10 people. We reserve the right to move you to a campsite more appropriate for your group size, if need be.
There are 4 graveled RV spots (sites #6 - #9) in camp proper with water and 30 amp electric hookups. One site, which we call BigRigsville, has a 50amp hookup, for the really big motorhomes. Tent campers may also book these sites if they'd like to park by their tents and have access to electricity.
Fire rings, picnic tables, chairs, 3 unique outhouses and 2 enclosed open air hot water showers. BBQ grills, a covered pavilion area, trails on site (pick dewberries from the mowed trails!) and time away from the hustle and bustle. We provide an initial supply of firewood at your campsite, but you are encouraged to either bring your own or ask Beaux to replenish your wood pile for a $10-15/bucket contribution to our chain-saw and axe wielding woodsman, Kip. Many horse pens and 2 covered stalls for those traveling with horses. We also still offer LIVE MUSIC, now by request at your personal campfire! Hollis, lead singer and songwriter for the Happy Horse Band, has taken up the ukulele since there is no more Happy Horse Band featured in the Pony Pavilion for gathered audiences, and she would be delighted to drive her golf cart stage to your campsite and do a properly distanced acoustic mini-show, featuring her original "adventure" music as well as some favorite old covers. The children seem to especially enjoy whirling and dancing to Hollis's exuberant rhythms and strong vocals!
Be sure and arrange this in advance, please. See the DASHBOARD EXTRAS category for more details.
On site owners Hollis and Beaux are at your beck and call for whatever you might need. There is a Scavenger Hunt list, and if you are interested in having something/many cool things! to look for while walking our wooded trails, ask for The List! If you find them all, we will give you a free Happy Horse tee shirt, a wonderfully graphic hand-pulled silk-screened tee shirt printed by Beaux on our kitchen table! (If you don't find everything, you can still get one, for $12) There is a nearby private pond (Moby Dick's Private Pond) for catch and release fishing, and if you have a fishing license you can hike into the park with your pole and fish from several places along the banks. (We do not think the iffy river access at the park is a suitable place for swimming. Head to Lake Bastrop for that!) The McKinney Roughs Nature Park, 2 miles up the road, is the gem of the Texas trail system, and we hope you avail yourselves of the awesome beauty during the changing seasons.
GET AWAY without going FAR AWAY! Feels like the middle of nowhere, but it's only 25 miles to downtown Austin and 15 miles to the charming little town of Bastrop with its eateries, shops, lake and river access, and historic buildings. Spend quiet nights in the country listening to the coyotes howl and the owls hoot. Hike the Roughs or book a river canoe or kayak trip with one of the local outfitters. Bring the family and have a weekend event under the trees and covered shade of our Pony Pavilion! Enjoy the campground and the on-site trails, a treasure hunt, the peace and quiet, and the NEW live acoustic A La Cart Camp Concerts! Happy Horse is a unique, magical woods and we are here for your enjoyment, peace of mind and relaxation.
NOTE: Due to a recent and previously never happened LateNightNoiseProblem, we must make a FIRST NEW RULE!
No untoward noise after 10pm from any part of the campground, and no electric cords for digital instruments are to be run from camp to any campsite. Bring acoustic instruments, please! We will post signs in the privies announcing this policy.

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Where to begin?! We had an absolutely phenomenal time at Happy Horse! We were greeted at the entrance by Beaux who gave us a detailed tour of the campground and trails winding through the 18 acres of property. There are several sites for primitive tent camping and four main campsites which you can drive right up to – since we sleep in our van, we opted for a main campsite close to the outdoor shower, outhouse, and shaded lounge deck. We spent the afternoon reading, cooking hotdogs over the fire, and walking the endless trails with our dog (you may see a couple neighbor dogs at some point, but don't worry, they are very friendly).
The drive in campsites are big enough for large campers or trailers. If you're looking for a great place to camp with your horse, you've found it. Not only is there plenty of room to ride, the campsite is also only a mile from McKinney Roughs Nature Park that boasts 15 miles of riding trails. We loved everything about the campsite, but one of our favorite things was the view of the stars from our campsite. The sky was so clear that we could see the milky way!
Beaux and Hollis were excellent hosts. They were detailed, friendly, and all around great people! They also provide wifi which was a nice touch. We would definitely recommend this campsite to any sized group.
Happy Horse Camping is an awesome campground. I had the chance to sit and visit with the hosts, Hollis and Beaux, and they were incredibly kind and welcoming.
The campground itself is in a great location and feels very private. It was a perfect distance from Austin in that it felt rather remote without to long of a drive! There are some popular horse trails right near this campground and there were horses at the campsite during my visit that were really beautiful to watch.
The Colorado River runs right behind the campsite and there are local outfitters for rafting and kayaking. In the evenings, with enough people around, there are gatherings under the gazebo and Hollis shares some of her own songs about the local area.
My stay at Happy Horse was wonderful! Upon arrival Hollis greeted me and gave me a tour of the farm in her golf cart, along with her two friendly pups (who got along great with my pup!). I was the only person camping there for the evening, so I had my choice of camping spots. She took me to the most secluded one, down one of the trails in the wooded area of the property. She provided a wagon for me to cart my stuff from my car - and even brought me a large jug of filtered water for the night! It was a nice and peaceful night. My dog Reggie and I heard a bit of music coming from a neighbors house and had to keep an eye out for spiders (but that just comes with the territory of camping!). There was firewood provided, so we made a roaring fire and explored the wooded trails by moonlight. There was a compost toilet provided for us and water spigots to refill water bottles. Almost all structures had twinkle lights too!
Reggie and I watched a lovely sunset and a quiet peaceful mist covered the ground over the horse pasture in the morning. Hollis was a perfect, accommodating host, and you can't beat the atmosphere at Happy Horse. I'd gladly stay again!
HHH was perfect for our family camping trip! We’re don’t have horses, but the proximity of HHH to McKinney Roughs and the Bastrop made it a great spot for us. From the moment we arrived until we left, Hollis and Beaux did everything they could to make our stay comfortable and fun. Our campsite felt secluded, but still only a short walk from the main camp with restrooms, a sink and a shower. We had plenty of firewood (cedar!), a grille and a picnic table. On the last night we had the pleasure of listening to a live performance of the Happy Horse Band!
Our kids loved exploring the property and interacting with all of the animals (dogs and horses). We spent a day hiking McKinney Roughs, and a day canoeing the Colorado River with Bastrop River Company. Had a great lunch at Neighbors in Bastrop, on Beaux’s recommendation.
Can’t wait to go back next time!
Hollis and Beaux are such gracious hosts! The property is beautiful and secluded even though it's just off the road a bit. All the other campers were super friendly and it was all in all a great atmosphere. Our daughters met a new friend named Cash and our dog made a few news friends as well. We will definitely be back!
I've been camping as long as I can remember. Mostly in state parks. This trip was better in many ways.
We were greeted by our hosts and shown to the campsite. We couldn't even see the next campsite. The sense of privacy and the quiet reminded me of going camping as a kid, and I realized just how much I love it.
The facilities are well cared for. They have wagons to carry your gear in, and plenty of firewood, as well as a grill for cooking.
There's a pavilion on-site if you want to hang out with other campers, and sometimes they have live music.
McKinney Roughs offers really nice hiking and biking trails, as well as equestrian trails, and it's a short drive away.
If you're looking for a secluded place to stay and unwind, for an evening or longer, bring your tent and sleeping bag. You'll be glad you did.
They can accommodate your RV or horse trailer, and for your friends who don't like camping, there are bungalows for rent, too. But you won't hear them or see them from your campsite.
I'd gladly stay here again.
The place was perfect and exactly as advertised (except a little better). Hollis was waiting on us when we arrived, gave us the grand tour and was very welcoming & informative. She and Beaux checked on us a couple of times to make sure we had everything we needed. The site (and the entire property) was clean and quiet and just what we needed. We are definitely going back.
it was mice and quiet there the host was sooper nice enjoy talking about how the horse ranch camping got started.
the outside HOT shower was great love it
lots of wild lift around.
