We were looking for a place to camp at the last minute. My wife discovered Hipcamp online, decided to search and we are both glad that she did. Happy Horse Hotel(HHH) is the place that we chose to go to. I ended up calling the owner, Hollis, to ensure that we would have a spot. We packed up the next day after work and headed out. If you have a GPS, you might not be able to trust it. My Garmin tried to take me up to the road right past where we were supposed to turn, so I listened to the GPS. 20 minutes later, 1 mile down a winding road to a locked gate and then heading back to the highway. Yes people, Garmin was wrong. No worries, turning right and driving down a couple hundred yards, got us back on track.
We arrived at Happy Horse Hotel right after sunset and we were greeted by Hollis and Beaux. It did not take to long to realize that these two people love what they do. Just kind of makes you feel at home! They walked us around the campground to show us where the outhouses are. Listen people, these are the nicest outhouses I have ever seen. HHH has many amenities that other campgrounds do not offer. Every spot we saw has a fire pit, a stack of wood, Bbq grill, water and electricity. They do cater to people with horses normally, saying that all of the spots do have corrals for horses. If you do venture in with horses, they will haul you down to the park for a day of riding. Do not let the horse camp steer you away, everyone is welcome.
Well, we enjoyed ourselves and we hope you venture over to the Happy Horse Hotel.

Where to begin?! We had an absolutely phenomenal time at Happy Horse! We were greeted at the entrance by Beaux who gave us a detailed tour of the campground and trails winding through the 18 acres of property. There are several sites for primitive tent camping and four main campsites which you can drive right up to – since we sleep in our van, we opted for a main campsite close to the outdoor shower, outhouse, and shaded lounge deck. We spent the afternoon reading, cooking hotdogs over the fire, and walking the endless trails with our dog (you may see a couple neighbor dogs at some point, but don't worry, they are very friendly).

The drive in campsites are big enough for large campers or trailers. If you're looking for a great place to camp with your horse, you've found it. Not only is there plenty of room to ride, the campsite is also only a mile from McKinney Roughs Nature Park that boasts 15 miles of riding trails. We loved everything about the campsite, but one of our favorite things was the view of the stars from our campsite. The sky was so clear that we could see the milky way!

Beaux and Hollis were excellent hosts. They were detailed, friendly, and all around great people! They also provide wifi which was a nice touch. We would definitely recommend this campsite to any sized group.

This is a quick getaway located between Austin and Bastrop just off of HWY 71. We stayed here for two weekend nights in our small teardrop camper. McKinney Roughs Nature Park is about ten minutes away by car where you can hike, take classes, trail ride, and access the Colorado River. The hosts were welcoming and chatty and their friendly dogs were adorable. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean and tidy and the mini-cabins were pretty darn cute. Each site has an iron fire ring and plenty of wood was provided. There is also a great gazebo that is perfect for groups or little events. I was impressed with the quality of the buildings on the property - everything was well constructed and decorated. Happy Horse is a horse hotel and there were two horses in camp corrals when we arrived. We also have horses and found this to be pleasant. I did wonder if non-horse people would find the horse presence intrusive. There looked to be a couple of sites further from the corrals if that is a concern. I think Happy Horse is best suited as a group campsite - the sites are close together and the mix of mini-cabins, tent, and small RV sites, along with the gazebo make it a great getaway for a big family or group of friends. If you take your horses trail riding this is a fantastic spot. There was some highway and neighbor noise but this is to be expected when you are just minutes away from Austin.

Happy Horse Camping is an awesome campground. I had the chance to sit and visit with the hosts, Hollis and Beaux, and they were incredibly kind and welcoming.

The campground itself is in a great location and feels very private. It was a perfect distance from Austin in that it felt rather remote without to long of a drive! There are some popular horse trails right near this campground and there were horses at the campsite during my visit that were really beautiful to watch.

The Colorado River runs right behind the campsite and there are local outfitters for rafting and kayaking. In the evenings, with enough people around, there are gatherings under the gazebo and Hollis shares some of her own songs about the local area.

We stayed at Happy Horse Campground over Thanksgiving and couldn't have asked for a more relaxing stay. Our hosts made sure we were comfortable, chatted with us about the history of their property, and turned on some cute twinkle lights so we could find our way around the campground at night. We sleep in our camper van, so their RV Site was perfect for us. It allowed us to stay centered in the campground and close to the shower, outhouse, and main pavilion where we could sit and read in the shade. Hollis said they've hosted Big Rigs and 40' trailers – so bring the whole family, there's plenty of room!

Could not have asked for a better experience! Hollis and Beaux might just be the nicest people we have ever met. More than accommodating. Even checked on our pups to make sure they were ok when we were out and about in Austin! They have a beautiful set up and have made something very special. We will 100% return and next time for a longer stay. This place is a must if you are looking for something out of the campground norm.
