We recently stayed at the Home Away From Home property for a cousins weekend (4 adult guys). We originally booked the Hansel and Gretel cabin but Vicky gave us a FREE upgrade without us even asking. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of our comfort and ensuring that we were going to enjoy our experience. The cabin was clean and had everything that we needed. I want to give a special recognition to Teresa (property manager) for all of her help. She checked in on us, welcomed us and made sure that we had everything we needed throughout the stay. The cabin and the property was beautiful and the animals were great to interact with. Again, big thanks to Vicki for upgrading us to the larger cabin which was much more comfortable.

The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is the communication. Before the process and during our stay I felt like I was constantly chasing down Vicki and Mickey. We called 8 times on the way to the property and at the gate and another guest had to let us onto the property. I spoke with Mickey to see if we could also participate in activities (survival wilderness course in the woods sounds cool!) and his response was more or less, sorry we are busy with other guests but I will come talk to you guys soon (he never did). The day we were leaving (and most other guests left) I finally heard back that saying there was availability but at that point it was too late. We are 4 grown men so we can make do without hand-holding but it was disappointing because we wanted to spend money on activities and we were not even given a chance to talk about it with the hosts (Mickey said he would come by the cabin 3 times and never did). Just didn't like feeling like we were an after thought when we also were paying guests.

I say this not to take away from the owners or the property - we loved the experience and had a great weekend. I definitely recommend but just be aware you need to communicate early if you want to do additional things. Be prepared that it may be a little more hands-off than expected (which is perfectly fine for some people).

Pros - Beautiful property, clean cabin, FREE upgrade to a larger cabin, lots of animals around, Teresa is wonderful

Cons - Issues with communication

We loved staying out with Victoria and Mickey! Their ranch is beautiful; absolutely pristine and well maintained. They have the most wonderful group of friendly well-loved animals. If you're lucky you'll get an in-depth tour of the feeding time ritual, from the chickens, goats, and horses, to the cutest pig we've ever met. The cabins are beautiful and each one is decorated according to it's own theme. They are all spotless and are a fantastic getaway in the beautiful Texas hills.

The communal fireplace is incredibly built and perfect for evening bonfires!Hansel & Gretel Cabin in the WoodsBeautiful kitchen area with a loft overheadHansel & Gretel Cabin in the Woods

Victoria and Mickey were excellent hosts and the cabin was cute and cozy.

Some tips and things to know about this listing: Be sure to communicate well in advance of your arrival to ensure a smooth check-in (sometimes it takes awhile to get a response, but no biggie if you’re planning ahead). Keep in mind that there is a $50 non-refundable pet fee per pet, which isn’t precisely mentioned on the listing, and is handled once you arrive. Be sure to read the welcome binder when you arrive, as they have specific policies that are not listed here.

Overall, we were happy with this cabin and would visit again!

Great weekend getaway! Perfect for the kids. They loved being with the animals and running around. We felt very safe and loved that they got to explore on their own. Our cabin was nice and comfortable. We enjoyed going into Boerne, such a cute town!

This ad does not do justice to how great this place is. The accommodations are simple but comfortable and clean; exactly what we were looking for. We stayed in the Hansel and Gretel cabin. I believe there are 9 in total that range from simple to resort-like. Animals roam the ranch freely. I woke up and played with some donkeys while my wife took photos from the warmth of our bed. There is also a pig, some chickens, a couple dogs and a herd of goats that roam the property. While it is only about 3 miles off the freeway, it feels like 100. It was a great way to escape.
Even more amazing than the property are the hosts, whom I am convinced are the most interesting couple in the world. Micky is retired army special forces, speaks 4 languages, teaches survival courses (scheduling that later), trains horses and may be the friendliest host we have ever encountered. His wife Vicky is an amazing human being but an even better chef. She cooked us an amazing anniversary dinner that put even the best fine-dining to shame. She literally interviewed us (detailed like a job interview) a few days in advance to learn about our flavor preferences. Our five course meal for 2 with champagne came at a price that was so low, I honestly felt guilty. After the meal, the most interesting couple in the word sat with us, shared a few drinks and some great conversation.

If you NEED a weekend away from it all, don't miss out on this place. Make sure you ask Vicky for her creme brulee; it is life-affirming.
