About Country Haven Nature Retreat
Country Haven is a "G" rated 40 acres of mixed pine forest where you can relax, de-stress, and enjoy time in Nature without crowds of people, and you can probably spend all day outside at the Haven without seeing any other person, if you want some serious time alone.
The Haven is not a manicured pine plantation, but is a more natural example of an East Texas mixed forest with a wide variety of native trees, flowers, other plants, and wildlife. We're working on our off-grid homestead and offer primitive camping now, but hope to have a cabin available for campers, soon. We have some main trails you can walk, and adventurous visitors may explore the woods and find our creek that has a glorious fern grotto and sometimes has several miniature waterfalls. We'll reserve you a specific site that meets your needs, or you can choose your campsite after you arrive.
If you have a tent you might pitch it near where you park, or put it in a more secluded area away from any roads where you'll have more privacy and be more immersed in nature. If you'd like an even more private experience, feel free to reserve all the campsites for your visit and be the only campers here during your stay! We have portable composting toilets and one can be placed at a convenient location for your chosen campsite, so wherever you camp you won't have a long trek to use "the facilities" : ) We don't have light pollution from city lights here, so you might enjoy checking out the night skies, when it's clear, and you might even see some fireflies, too.
There are lots and lots of trees here that would support hammocks, so feel free to bring yours and enjoy looking up through the pines! We're starting general support group meetings for adults at Country Haven soon and you're welcome to join in, but we don't have babysitting available, so please keep that in mind, if you have young children. We try to keep jigsaw puzzles, VCR movies, and coloring supplies for adults and children, plus assorted other items available for our guests, and would be glad to show you around the homestead we're developing with a rainwater collection system, rare and unusual farm animals, sensory garden, xeriscape (low water requirement) garden, waterlily pools, and permaculture food plants.
We sometimes have plants, veggies, seeds, eggs, poultry, (chickens and ducks), and Nigerian Dwarf goats, (miniature dairy goats), plus a few basic supplies available for purchase, so just ask what's available, if you're interested in those. If you find a small tree here you'd like to re-home, let us know. You might be able to adopt it and take it with you, when you leave.
We're about 90 miles Southeast of the DFW metroplex, and there are many activities and attractions in the area. There are free public swimming areas and free paved boat launches at two nearby lakes, with Lake Palestine about 10 minutes away and Lake Jacksonville about a 20 minute drive. We're about ten minutes from Jacksonville where you can shop for supplies, watch a movie, attend the Tomato Fest, or eat out. It's about 45 minutes to Tyler, where you might enjoy their world-famous municipal rose garden (free), azalea trails, Caldwell Zoo, UT Tyler and Tyler Junior College activities, rose festival and parade (in October), plus many opportunities for shopping, dining, and having fun. The main depot for the Texas State Railroad is about 30 minutes away, near Rusk, and Palestine is about 45 minutes away, with their Dogwood Trails, hot pepper festival, and several other events. The Texas State Fisheries center at Athens is about an hour away, where you can enjoy learning activities plus a native fish aquarium display, and fishing gear is available for your use while fishing in stocked ponds (no fishing license required, there). It's about 90 minutes to Canton, Gladewater, Henderson, Longview, Nacogdoches, and Lufkin and their many attractions, and there are many other interesting places and events in the area. Square dancing, "friendship set to music", is our national folk dance, and the 2018 Texas State Square dance festival is to be in Tyler. There are several active square dance clubs in the area and you can find a square dance most every night of the week within an easy drive from Country Haven. It's a "G" rated activity and they always welcome visitors to watch, or dance.
Although the retreat fronts a major highway, our private roads cannot accommodate big rigs, extremely tall rigs, or long tandems. We don't have any pull-through sites yet, so please get in touch before you make a reservation if you plan to bring a travel trailer, boat, etc. We're mostly wooded and have limited parking so have a limit of 2 vehicles, (or 1 vehicle with one trailer or boat), per campsite. If you need more than 2 parking spaces that's ok, just reserve enough campsites to accommodate your parking needs : ) To help preserve the serenity and natural setting, guests may not use off-road vehicles in the retreat and no motorized vehicles on the trails, but River Run ATV park and Mud Nationals are both just a few minutes away, for those who like to get muddy!
Come stay for a night, a week, a month, or longer, but please get in touch if you have any questions, and treat yourself to time outside in Nature, somewhere : ) Our camping areas are not lighted, so please plan to arrive in time to get settled in before dark, if possible, and bring at least one working flashlight to use, in case you need it. No check-ins after 8pm unless arrangements are made and confirmed by 5pm on your scheduled arrival day. We're looking forward to meeting you when you come visit Country Haven!
