Country Haven is a "G" rated 40 acres of mixed pine forest where you can relax, de-stress, and enjoy time in Nature without crowds of people.  Although our driveway is right off a major highway, you can walk down in the woods to get away from the sounds of civilization, and if you want some serious time alone, you can probably spend all day outside at the Haven without seeing another person.

The Haven is not a manicured pine plantation, but is a more natural example of an East Texas mixed forest with a wide variety of native trees, flowers, other plants, and wildlife. We're working on our homestead and offer primitive camping now, but hope to have a cabin available for campers, soon. We have some main trails you can walk, and adventurous visitors may explore the woods and find our creek that has a glorious fern grotto and sometimes has several miniature waterfalls. We'll reserve you a specific site that meets your needs, or you can choose your campsite after you arrive.

If you have a tent you can choose to pitch it near where you park, or put it in a more secluded area away from even our private roads, where you'll have more privacy and be more immersed in nature. If you seriously want a private experience, feel free to reserve all the campsites for your visit and be the only campers here during your stay! We have portable composting toilets and one can be placed at a convenient location for your chosen campsite, so wherever you camp you won't have a long trek to use "the facilities" : ) We don't have light pollution from city lights here, so you might enjoy checking out the night skies, when it's clear.  The moon shining through the pines is a glorious sight, and you might even see some fireflies, too. There are lots and lots of trees here that would support hammocks, so feel free to bring yours and enjoy relaxing on your hammock and looking up through the pines at the stars!

We're starting general support group meetings for adults at Country Haven soon and you're welcome to join in, but we don't have babysitting available, so please keep that in mind, if you have young children. We try to keep jigsaw puzzles, VCR movies, and coloring supplies for adults and children, plus assorted other items available for our guests.  If you're interested, we'd be glad to show you around the homestead.  We're working on a rainwater collection system, sensory garden, xeriscape (low water requirement) garden, waterlily pools, and starts of several permaculture food plants.

We sometimes have plants, veggies, seeds, eggs, poultry, (chickens and ducks), and Nigerian Dwarf goats, (miniature dairy goats), plus a few basic supplies available for purchase, so just ask what's available, if you're interested in those. If you find a small tree here you'd like to re-home, let us know. You might be able to adopt it and take it with you, when you leave.

We're about 90 miles Southeast of the DFW metroplex, and thereare many activities and attractions in the area. There are freepublic swimming areas and free paved boat launches at twonearby lakes, with Lake Palestine about 10 minutes away and LakeJacksonville about a 20 minute drive. We're about ten minutesfrom Jacksonville where you can shop for supplies, watch a movie, attend the Tomato Fest, or eat out. It's about 45 minutes to Tyler, where you might enjoy their world-famous municipal rose garden (free), azaleatrails, Caldwell Zoo, UT Tyler and Tyler Junior College activities, rose festival and parade (in October), plus many opportunities forshopping, dining, and having fun. The main depot for the Texas StateRailroad is about 30 minutes away, near Rusk, and Palestine is about 45 minutes away, with their Dogwood Trails, hot pepper festival, andseveral other events. The Texas State Fisheries center atAthens is about an hour away, where you can enjoy learningactivities plus a native fish aquarium display, and fishing gear isavailable for your use while fishing in stocked ponds (no fishing license required, there). It'sabout 90 minutes to Canton, Gladewater, Henderson, Longview,Nacogdoches, and Lufkin and their many attractions, and there aremany other interesting places and events in the area. Square dancing, "friendship set to music", is our national folk dance, and the2018 Texas State Square dance festival is to be in Tyler. There are several active square dance clubs in the area and you canfind a square dance most every night of the week within an easy drivefrom Country Haven. It's a "G" rated activity and they always welcome visitors to watch, ordance.

Although the retreat fronts a major highway, our private roadscannot accommodate big rigs, extremely tall rigs, or long tandems. We don't have any pull-through sites yet, soplease get in touch before you make a reservation if you plan tobring a travel trailer, boat, etc. We're mostly wooded and havelimited parking so have a limit of 2 vehicles, (or 1 vehicle with onetrailer or boat), per campsite. If you need more than 2 parkingspaces that's ok, just reserve enough campsites to accommodate yourparking needs : ) To help preserve the serenity and natural setting, guests may not use off-road vehicles in the retreat and no motorizedvehicles on the trails, but River Run ATV park and Mud Nationals areboth just a few minutes away, for those who like to get muddy!

Come stay for a night, a week, a month, or longer, but please get in touch if you have any questions, and treat yourself to time outside in Nature, somewhere : ) Our camping areas are not lighted, so please plan to arrive in time to get settled in before dark, if possible, and bring at least one working flashlight to use, in case you need it. No check-ins after 8pm unless arrangements are made and confirmed by 5pm on your scheduled arrival day. We're looking forwardto meeting you when you come visit Country Haven!

This was my first experience with hipcamp. Paula was nice, offered a homemade soup, helped gather fire wood, and her dogs were friendly. The location however was not what I expected...two old broken down mobile homes on the way in, a trash filled trailer close to where I was to camp, too much junk around. If you just need a place to park for the night at a cheap cost, as I did, it was OK, but not somewhere I would stay for more than just a night. It was not what I would consider "hip".
