This Camp originally was a girls and boys camp. Started by Colonel Reynolds in 1947 every summer it was opened for campers from all over the United States. Coach Moore, of Sewanee, the University of the South, took over in the early 1980s. My husband Charles Kildgore, was a counselor in training in 1974. When it came up for sale we couldn't help but purchase it to reclaim the history of what it once was. Learn more about this land: Pitch your tent and enjoy the beauty of nature near many hiking trails, lakes and a small town that hosts many quaint eateries and local arts. Daddy daughter camping done right.
Nice campground. Great bathrooms. Helpful hosts. Lake swimming ten minutes walk down the road. Historical hike right out of the gate. Dog friendly. Fun hikes a short drive away. Pretty much ticks all the boxes. Will stay with these folks again.

Basecamp at Camp Mtn. Lake Retreats
I love this campsite! This was my second time camping here. Cindy is a very responsive host and made it clear she was there for whatever we might need! This campsite feels spaced out and intimate at the same time. Such a beautiful space and just a few minutes walk from a lake with a beach for swimming, an easy hiking trail surrounding, and fishing. It was a little too cold for swimming in the creek but we had a wonderful time looking at the nature surrounding the lake and hanging out at the campsite! You really feel secluded while still knowing you’re just a short distance from town. Thanks Cindy!

Unclean and miscommunication
There was no one to pick up the excess of trash from the previous group which was 40 kids I was told. In addition to that Saturday first thing in the morning there was a safety course for Hancones scheduled through the local police department which we were not aware of or we would’ve camp somewhere else. My kids are terrified had I had known in advance I probably could’ve dealt with it and been off at the lake but I was not notified When it comes to camping spaces especially tent camping there are expectations to be upheld and I feel that the property owner has some serious work to do in that area when it comes to camping spaces especially tent camping there are expectations to be upheld and I feel that the property owner has some serious work to do in that area Especially at the premium rate they are asking

DIRTY AND UNSAFE
We showed up Friday evening and the bathrooms were dirty, the trash full, and the free firewood was used up. No one came the entire time to clean or check on anything. There were only 3 picnic tables and one was by the bathrooms so only 2 for use at sites (for a 6 site campground). There's only one firepit total. For $50 per night would expect more. The cherry on the top is that the stables where people camp and the bathroom are located (50 feet from children camping in the grass) is also a shooting range. 20 cops showed up and shot clip after clip for 2 hours. One gentlemen with children mentioned to the owner that he was upset and the owner basically said you can leave if you want.

Basecamp at Camp Mtn. Lake Retreats
convenient and cool
This place is so cool for those who want to check out the world-class hiking trails in south cumberland. The base camp is separate (across the road) from the main old summer camp campus, in a little glen next to the old stables. Unlike other campsites on Hipcamp, this is super easy to find, right off the road and literally two miles away from a grocery store. It also has HOT WATER showers and toilets. I would probably describe it as a hyper-mini version of a primitive state park campground (which i've been avoiding due to coronavirus) I've seen other reviews that didn't like the proximity to the road. I thought it was useful. Also, the road isn't a highway -- it's a small country road where maybe a few cars go by an hour. At night you can hear great horned owls hooting at each other. Very cool. Also recommend checking out the old summer camp that's being rehabbed across the road!

Perfect campsite for birthday trip
Amazing stay with a small group of friends and a couple dogs. There was only one other couple there so we had half of the place to ourselves. Was so nice to be camping somewhere beautiful, wooded, and rustic, but still have nice amenities like clean bathrooms, hot water, great drinking water, and electricity. It was also perfect for dogs because they could roam freely. We will absolutely be back!
