I brought my dad here when we were driving across country, and without a doubt, this was one of the most amazing experiences we had. We felt so welcomed by Lucille and Ed and so incredibly lucky to have stayed on such beautiful land. The teepee is beautiful, the land was incredible, and the stars at night are unbeatable. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone and everyone.

The location is gorgeous, filled with wildflowers and fields that make it seem like you are miles from civilization. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area, walking by the prairie dogs, seeing the horses as we drove in, and searching for buffalo with Ed and Lucille. Ed and Lucille were great hosts and it was an honor to learn from them about the land and history of the area. We were excited to help with putting up the Tipi but unfortunately we started the process as a storm was coming in and a gust came up and ripped the fabric so we were unable to stay the night in it and ended up staying in the tent that we had along with us. We hope to be able to come back one day to experience the Lakota Tipi in the rolling hills of South Dakota, it is truly a beautiful area.

We knew we were going to stay somewhere special the second we saw the listing for Buffalo Dreams. Our little family was not disappointed upon arrival on the Pine Ridge Reservation. We met Lucille at the Porcupine Trading Post and then drove the short drive to the tipi. We soon saw horses, cattle and prairie dogs roaming the rolling landscape that is doted with ponderosa pines.
The tipi is situated atop western South Dakota's massive rolling hills. The tipi itself has a cot that fit my wife and daughter. I slept in my sleeping bag atop a camp pad. The tipi is open on the bottom and top, but bugs nor animals were an issue. I can't say how excited my 4 year old was to spend time in an authentic Lakota tipi.
There's endless opportunities to hike in the area. Do be forewarned that the grass can be pretty harsh on your legs. It's also the perfect environment for some quality kite flying.
Later Ed (who's ancestral land the tipi sits on) and Lucillle took us for a drive through the Buffalo grazing land. We only ended up spotting one elusive buffalo, but we also saw wild antelope and deer as sun set on Buffalo Dreams. It was such a great opportunity to learn about the Oglala Lakota's traditions and their deep regard for their land and the animals.
Be sure to take the short drive north to the Stronghold Unit of the Badlands National Park, which is also on the reservation. After our stay at the tipi, we were able camp in the Badlands wilderness without any other people in site. Between our day at the tipi and the dispersed camping in the Badlands we had a bucket list experience on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
