Hacienda Liberación offers a natural rustic agro-forest family-run retreat for the adventurous and environmentally aware camper, backpacker, and traveler in Puerto Rico (Borikén). Hacienda Liberación is also known as “Koakoték Barakutáshi” in the Taino-Borikenaíki language.

Hacienda Liberación, part of which was a former coffee plantation, is located in rural Barrio Anones, Las Marias in the Urayoán Mountains of western Puerto Rico, just 25-35 minutes from Mayaguez, Añasco, and other coastal areas and beaches. Hacienda Liberación is about 1 hour from Aguadilla and about 2 hours from San Juan. Within Las Marias, Hacienda Liberación is about 15 minutes to the Las Marias Plaza (center of town, supermarket, post office, restaurants) and about 5 minutes to the nearest convenience store, amenities, and gas station.

Situated atop the Urayoán Mountains (1,174.5ft/358m above sea level) with amazing views, Hacienda Liberación’s main campsite area is the large hill summit (Cerro Urayoán) and surrounding grassy pasturelands. The tropical forest area is very large and slowly descends to a large creek, which marks the northern boundary. A smaller beautiful and pristine creek (Quebrada Eljónepa) starts and runs through Hacienda Liberación. Two main trail paths exist, but more are being planned. Although the main campsite area is atop the hill summit, campers can pitch a tent and hammock anywhere on the 32-acre tropical forest property, even next to the creeks.

Hacienda Liberación is a very beautiful, tranquil, natural, and private place for those that want to discover and reconnect with nature; enjoy tropical forest hiking trails; bird watching; wildlife observation; tree and botanical identification; meditation; forest exploration; natural group retreats, sleep under the stars with coquis, and experience Puerto Rico in its natural state.

After Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, our family and locals helped clear the trails and paths of fallen trees, fixed the fencing, and improved the main trails. Since then, Hacienda Liberación has recovered its lush forests and scenic landscape. From the large hill summit area, one can see vast distances, particularly the other ranges of the Urayoán Mountains, the Cordillera Central and to the west, the Atlantic Ocean and Mona Passage.

At Hacienda Liberación, we are also developing an agro-forest where native trees are accompanied by various tropical fruit trees, citrus trees, banana trees on the trails, coffee, and cacao trees. In the future, we aim to grow more cacao on a few acres. Campers are free to enjoy any fruit they can gather.

Hacienda Liberación is a very large property and you may be sharing the hill campsite and the forest area with other campers. Hacienda Liberación has no residential or bathroom facilities. We do not allow campfires (only small camping stoves) and expect all campers to follow basic camping safety. We also expect all campers to observe “Leave No Trace” principles, not obstruct paths and trails, properly park their vehicles, and expect all trash and personal belongings to be taken out of the property.

At Hacienda Liberación, there is no Wi-Fi, but there is cell phone and 4G reception for those with smart phones (please remember to bring your solar charger). We have a local caretaker who lives nearby who visits and checks up on the property when we are not in Las Marias. The caretaker and us are just a quick phone call, e-mail, or text away if you need anything at all.

Your stay at Hacienda Liberación helps us support our forest and environmental conservation initiatives and agro-forestry, fruit tree, and cacao farming efforts.

We know you will enjoy the natural beauty of Hacienda Liberación.
