Such a great place to camp!
A large group of us camped at Sheeder Mill over July 4th weekend and had a great experience. We had a lot of questions prior to camping, and Altje was very helpful and accommodating. The space was large and well kept, and we had plenty of room to set up our tents and spread out.
Pro Tips:
1) Get the firewood bundle - it's worth it! We were there three nights and one bundle was more than enough.
2) Do yourself a favor and go on Amazon ahead of time and buy a big pack of Mosquito Repellent Coils. Put one on a paper plate covered in aluminum foil and stick that bad boy in the toilet tent. The tent doesn't smell, but flies/mosquitoes can easily just fly up underneath it if they want (and they WILL want), so there's no use in bothering to zip the tent up tight when you're not in there. If anything, zipping it up tight traps the flies inside. These coils worked AMAZINGLY well to keep the bugs out, and they last for about 7 hours. Totally worth it to burn 2-3 of them per day in there to keep the flies away.
3) Speaking of the toilet tent, also pick up some antibacterial wipes/gel to use afterwards.
Questions some people in our group had that you might have too:
Q: Should I book this site?
A: YES! It was wonderful
Q: What's the bathroom situation REALLY like?
A: It's actually FINE. No biggie. It's a 5 gallon pail with sawdust and a toilet seat inside a little tent. You sprinkle sawdust on top when you're done using it. It DOESN'T smell. It's fine.
Q: But what about toilet paper?
A: Yep, that goes in there too. It's fine. They supplied a roll, but we brought extra that we used.
Q: I read a review that there was animal feces nearby.
A: YUP sure was, because there's a horse farm nearby. You're camping, stop complaining about stuff that is 100% not a big deal. This place is cleaner than 95% of any other campsite you'll ever stay at.
Q: Can I really bathe in the creek?
A: Sure, if you want to. It is definitely refreshing when it's super hot out. We brought a raft and a rope to tie off to a tree and just float around. It was GREAT!
Pros:
- Almost everything
- You see lots of horses, oxen, free range chickens, etc. PRETTY COOL!
- Lots of space
- SO much more private than camping at a regular campground
- There's a nearby winery we liked so much, we went there twice: Stone Barn Cellars Winery. They had real friendly people working there, good wine, and nice bathrooms!
Cons:
- We probably could have used a 2nd trash can. We filled ours by the third night and was worried about animals getting into it.
- The ONLY con I can think of relating to the bathroom is that the tent is kinda small. If there was a little more room in there, it would have been a better experience. Pretty sure this is standard size though for any HipCamp site.
