This is a good jumping-off point for exploring the area, as it is a short walk into the town and a short driving distance to the state parks. I camped in the larger of the fields, both of which are mowed grass areas next to the house. This is a basic site, where you will be required to bring all your own amenities, or be prepared to go into town to eat and use a bathroom. The host, Diane, is very friendly and was great at communicating with me over the phone/text.

Thank you for staying with us. Since you were here we have added additional amenities such as a compost potty and a fire pit. We also have a "charging station", access to Wi-fi, access to water and a BBQ for cooking.

This was our first time using Hipcamp, so we weren't sure what to expect, but any doubts were wiped away with this stay. Diane was a great host and the spot was much better than we expected. We stayed in site #1, which is smaller and not drive in, but Diane let us drive in to unload which was a big help. I liked the spot more because it was "cozier," and felt a bit more private. The spot was more remote than I thought it would be...it's her yard but it feels like a little spot of semi-wilderness and backs up to this huge meadow where we collected wildflowers - they were beautiful in late July. You can see the sunset through the trees or if you head back to the meadow. Diane provides all the basics...hose water, a charging station, refuse containers, a community fire pit and a compost toilet. Vernonia is a sweet mountain town, with a couple restaurants and bars, a basic grocery store, a few more stores and such. We did a bit of biking along the Banks-Vernonia multiuse trail (a railway turned paved trail) and it was beautiful...I'm sure the full way is amazing. I would caution anyone wanting to fish in the area to bring in their own bait and tackle, as it seems that despite having a sweet little stocked lake right in town, there is nowhere to buy the necessary implements. The "pool" where they dam up the river in the summer is kind of cool, especially for little kids or for someone who wants to swim for exercise, kind of a mountain town version of the city pool. I actually got some laps in. In addition to enjoying the town of Vernonia, which is about 3 minutes from this spot, we ventured into Portland for the day and had a blast. It's about an hour drive, fine for a day trip. Last but not least, Diane is a very friendly, kind person. If you are looking for company, she will sit by the fire with you, but if you just want your privacy at your site, she doesn't intrude. Oh, and she's tolerant of kids, even curious, energetic, loud ones. We liked it so much we ended up staying an extra night!

I enjoyed having you and your family visit my little piece of heaven. The kids and I had nice conversations and I had a nice time entertaining them. Think of me when you go through Portland again!

Diane is super friendly and guided us to our site, giving us all the details we needed to know. It’s a great place if you’re needing a safe shady place to drop at when traveling the coast. Has all the basics for the night.

Our host was very kind, available, and promptly responded to any questions we had. The host will provide campfire wood if needed and that was a bonus. The site itself is clean. The toilet had a lot of mouse droppings and a strong urine smell which was concerning as disturbing it can cause respiratory issues. The campsites are in someone’s backyard. We positioned our tent facing northwest for a more outdoor feel. We weren’t thrilled about the fence/boat/house/structures being so close to us. Both sites are really close to the house. There is a designated spot for fire that is away from the camp sites. We slept outside in a tent but didn’t feel much like camping. We would have preferred to have a nice campfire at our site. Thank you.

Diane was great. Simple site in a back yard but the yard is deep and it’s quiet. Diane helped get water for our camper. Lots of room. Close to town but doesn’t feel in town. There is an old sailboat in the yard and an old camper which serves as the outhouse if you don’t have your own. We will be back. Fun little town and great access to cycling
