A small group of friends and I stayed here to view the eclipse. It was a spectacular place -- the landscape was absolutely perfect for viewing. Our favorite feature was swimming and camping beside the White River, which was the perfect cold treat to combat the heat. The river itself was pretty magical, and worth the trip! I have never seen water as clear and teal, the photos really do not do it justice. I fell asleep to the cricket songs and gentle babble of the river each night. Seeing the eclipse there, along with clear enough skies to see the meteor shower was really something special.
There were a few things I wish had gone differently about the trip. The hosts were far less friendly than expected -- explaining at length everything we were *not* to do during our stay, and rather curt email responses that left the impression we were more a nucance than a guests. I had expected the friendly exchanges I'm used to having with hosts that air on the side of what we can do, opposed to what we could not. There was a painted sign near our site that summed it up pretty well that read "If I catch you I will shoot you". The sprinklers were left running 24 hours a day, leaving many little pools of stagnant water that were home to crazy amounts of mosquitos. And yet, there was no water available onsite despite it being listed as an amenity. Lastly, I was pretty disappointed to find that I had not actually booked the entire place. The description made it sound like we had rented the whole place, but instead found we were sharing it with 4 other groups, with first come first serve to the best spots. We made the best of it and befriended some of the other guests, but I would have felt more comfortable with this if it were made clear in the description and the price were lower.
What a beautiful piece of land! The cliffs are lovely and there is a wonderful little beach on the river. The hosts were very pleasant and quick to respond to all communications. However...the mosquitos were absolutely horrendous. Even with bug repellent, it was unbearable for my two companions and I. And I'm not unfamiliar with enjoying the outdoors. We left a day early due to being eaten alive. I am sure that it is very pleasant here at other times of the year, but be prepared!
We had a great stay at White River Canyon....despite the mosquitoes. Beautiful scenery. Plenty of places to set up camp for tents and vans alike. We started out on the grass near a picnic bench but realized the grass was prime mosquito property. We moved closer to the river in an area of sand and shaded by trees and had better luck. Perfect sand beach at river's edge. Great little swimming spot (but current can be strong for little ones if they venture out beyond their thighs). My kids usually don't like dogs that much but they were quick to make friends with the two friendly and pretty well behaved ranch dogs. We were able to change our reservation dates at the last minute with no problems. Stores in town to get last minute provisions...like extra mosquito repellent!
