About Goose Lake State Recreation Area

Goose Lake makes up for its shallow water level with a depth of wildlife watching and an abundance of serene lake lazy-ness. Migratory waterfowl are commonly spotted here as well as the resident mule deer that make camp at the recreation area. The Lake Country Railroad crosses the park midday on its way to Alturas, California (that’s right, Goose Lake straddles Oregon and Cali!) and adds a little nostalgic train whistle to the pine scented air. Goose Lake is great for the camper that appreciates the calmness of smaller grounds or for the day-tripper that cherishes afternoons in a kayak with binoculars hanging around her neck and a book open in her lap.

The lake is very shallow, and doesn't always have water anywhere near the campground. It sites literally right next to the CA border, but thankfully is an OR campground, not a CA one. Very pleasant stopover along 395.

Nice large state campground. Pricey $22 but has showers. Very quiet and off main road. Short but nice hikes. Could not get to lake as it has shrunk and now has marsh. Right on Or/Cal border.
