Built in 1927, the Elalah (named after the historic Chinook village nearby) has a unique history as a musician's home and a cat shelter. Expanded and fully renovated in 2018, we have opened the house to our guests to share with those who are looking to celebrate a special occasion, holiday, or to simply recharge from our hectic lives. Nature walks, gardens, orchards, creek, and a small lake await you just outside your door. This beautiful light-filled house is fun, hip, and comfy.

The space

This unique space was once a small cottage on the property. It once housed the first Columbia County Human Societies space for cats and its final occupant with the famous jazz bassist, John Nyberg. John and his wife were the original founders of 13 Nights on a River which started out as a jazz festival here in St. Helens, Oregon and now hosts musicians each Thursday evening at the waterfront for 13 weeks in the summer-time. We have renovated this original space that includes a beautiful cord wood wall letting light into the living, dining, and kitchenette area with a cathedral ceiling. The full sized bathroom's shower is stunning with it's rock floor. The main bedroom on the ground floor is cozy, comfortable and looks out on the Sanctuary Garden. The loft area is easily accessed by ladder and has two comfy beds complete with quilts, just like Grandma's house!

Guest access

The house is easily accessed through it's own entrance or through our administrative office that separates the main house and this space.

Interaction with guests

When guests come to our special place we show them around the space and answer any questions they may have. This is your time and we honor that by giving you space to explore or just be. We do live on the property and will be available if they have any questions or concerns.

Other things to note

There are plenty of nature trails that will walk you through the 20 acres here including the orchards, hilltop overlook, lower meadow, lake, and creek side walk. Weather permitting you can enjoy several common areas on the property that include fire pits. The barn area, if not in use, hosts up and coming artists and you can walk through the gallery at any time and use any art supplies that may be out in the barn if you feel art expression may be calling your name.
