Great site! Matt was a great host and he helped me find the best spot on the farm trip camp, it had a great view of the valley, the sunset over the mountains and the Christmas trees. There was even a hot tub that I didn’t expect, which was awesome! Also Matt had great suggestions for the site. Even with all the recent smoke, I was able to see a ton of stars at night and the tail end of the Perseid meteors. I would keep tabs on this site because Matt is definitely planning on adding a lot more local amenities and activities—thanks Matt for the great stay!
If this was advertised as primitive camping, I would have no issues. However, the one review here and other things mentioned in the ad are not an accurate view of our experience. This is literally camping on a tree farm. We were secluded, and we made the best of the situation. It was a beautiful farm to camp on, but I feel this listing was very misleading. The best thing about this location is 5 minutes from town and within 30 min of many different hikes and natural attractions. I had cell reception, but t mobile doesn't work anywhere.
There were no amenities. There are no designated camp sites. No access to water that we could find. No Creek access. Definitely no hot tub as pictured. Campfires weren't allowed at this time, but there were no fire pits anyways. I would recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle for this site and be sure to bring more than enough water.
When I arrived there was a large truck dumping old furniture and as we drove around it was clear that many in the town nearby use this land as a dump site for their garbage. There were RVs on site, no clue if they were occupied or not. We did find one Porto potty. In general, it didn't feel safe. Luckily we we're prepared to rough it and town was close enough to refill on water as we needed to.
My advice to the host is to provide a map of the farm and designated campsites with flat ground. Identify where the amenities are and water access. And please Close the gate!
The perfect spot
This is such a premier camping location! I would have been happy with just a nice piece of ground to put up a tent, but Matt made our experience so much more than that.
An amazing view, a hot tub under the stars, a huge teepee, a grill with charcoal, a hose with running water, a fire pit (he even supplied some wood), and an amazing view if you just kind of want to get away from it all.
As long as you're not a glamper that needs everything catered and unrealistic expectations, I don't see how you could give this place a negative review.
We drove about 10 minutes to a fishing spot Matt recommended, and hooked quite a few rainbow trout as well.
Here's some information you might find helpful when deciding your own trip: There are no bathrooms, but an outhouse is supplied. The teepee is huge, but it is primarily open which means there can be bugs just like camping outside. I loved camping in my uncovered tent and being able to look at the stars. There is a little fire pit that we used to cook our food, but I can understand that as the season gets more dry why open fires might not be allowed later in summer. There is a single hose that they set up for water, we still packed in our own just in case. There are some friendly animals on the property which will probably say hello including dogs, cats, and lambs. It can be a little windy at the top of the mountain.
Matt is super communicative and even helped me jump my car on the way out of town.
Definitely coming back here again!
An amazing place for camping!
That is the best camping place for us!
We planned to Crate Lake and was looking for a good camping place. I just found this place by chance because it had some good reviews and a reasonable price. Our kids don't like those campgrounds surrounding because of the smell of toilet or not so much stuff/fun things to do). That was the best decision so far and it made the best memorable trip for us.
1. That was a beautiful view which is better than I expected. We located in site-2, which on top of the hill and we can enjoy all primitive landscapes such as mountains, rivers with over 50,000 Christmas trees around. We could sit beside the camping fire and enjoy a stunning view by night with a million stars and the Moon.
2. A large teepee with nice stuff inside. Our kid really loves it and we decided to this teepee instead of building our tent. I love its design, look like the lives of Indians in some movies.
3. The hot tub is a great idea, we came so late and just tried to use by the late of the night but that was a wonderful feeling, very comfortable and enjoyable.
4. Friendly animals like ponies, dogs, sheep... help our kids had a lot of fun and even they didn't want to back home.
5. Clean and clean toilet. The shower also provided then nothing to complain.
6. The most important thing is that we had a great host here. Matt was super friendly and helped us a lot. All staffs have ready, firewood supplied, BBQ pot, table, etc... He even brought us an oven for cooking a pizza. Matt's family were also great, super communicative. His kids were adorable and our kid wants to come back to see them.
I don't see any negative things but there are some notices may help newcomers when deciding your trip:
1. T-mobile doesn't work there. Matt mentioned to us before the trip then that was not the big deal for us.
2. There are some bugs/insects inside the teepee (that is normal). We were still OK to sleep but I had to build a small tent inside the teepee for our kids.
In conclusion, that worth the money, and we definitely coming back again and spend more time there. Highly recommend and I wish I could give more than 5 stars.
Very bad experience
Had a 4 day booking with Matt. Was my FIRST time trying HC. (done airbnb for years & also an experienced camper). Place sounded rustic but nice. Top of a hill, views, teepee, port a potty, even a hot tub etc.
But had trouble finding the place, but once we were on his driveway, 3 dogs were following us, including one huge dog. This was AFTER I had told him I was allergic to dogs & he said he would keep them fenced.
He met us on an atv at the road exasperated. He said " we are not ready for guests. I don't have time for this, I've got a crew waiting for me-- You can cancel if you want". UGH. This was after being booked for a month & multiple messages. & we had plans for 4 nights, with 6 people coming. I said we have 4 nights booked & we had just driven 1.5 hr to get there!
He asked if I was really allergic, said some people are just afraid, said he had a medical background, etc. This was disconcerting. I said I just needed him to keep the dogs away. He told us to follow him to the site, & the teepeee & site were about 300ish yards past their house.
After we got out of car, he told us he was mad at his wife for booking this, someone else was supposed to manage it, he was too busy and he wanted to cancel it. He also said he was going to cancel all future bookings until they were really ready. (It is still up on Hipcamp as of now)
Matt also said the teepee was set up all wrong & people were bothered by bugs. I told him we were used to rustic camping.
I asked him about wood, which he had said he would provide for us, but he said "did I say that?"
He said he would throw some over the fence at his house or there was a big pile of wood at the end of the driveway we could go get some.
He told us the hot tub was cloudy but someone had cleaned it. He warned us it might be too hot, but could use the hose to cool off the hot tub but it might come out brown.
I asked if there was toilet paper in the outhouse and he said yes. (There wasn't, but luckily I had a roll with me).
We felt intrusive & unwelcome. Then noticed about 6 piles of horse manure all over the camp. Also little tree stumps everywhere and no level ground for tents. As we were setting everything up, a horse came into our camp & starting pooping. It wouldn't leave until we finally scared it away. Then the dogs came back. Scared them away. My partner went to Matt's house to get the wood and it wasn't there. My partner drove down the driveway but it was getting dark by this point & he couldn't find the "pile".
I messaged Matt could he have someone come clean up poop. About 1.5 hr later, getting dark, his wife and kids came with a shovel & cleaned up some of it. She said they would "TRY" to keep the dogs in. I said I really needed them to stay away. She said we could close the gate by their house but it was really heavy. Already exhausted from setting everything up we just sat. Then Matt messaged and said "don't close the gate just scare the horse away. "
My partner and I were dismayed to realize once we were inside the teepee, it was totally open to the outside. Which explained the plethora of bugs. At about 9pm, very dismayed, we tried to sleep. Waking up several times to brush bugs off. At 7:30 in the morning, the huge dog's head was poking in to the teepee. My partner chased the dogs off again. He came back in and we were asking each other is we should go. I texted Matt but he didn't get back to me right away. We debated. But decided at least we could sit in the hottub. We opened it and it was cloudy and muddy all over the bottom, and no smell at all of chlorine.
So again, we went in the teepeee. Matt had messaged back that he was going to attempt to find a place for the dogs to go. We sat there wondering what to do.
Waiting for Matt to get back to us, the last straw was horse and now goats coming in our camp, trying to eat our stuff, horse would NOT be scared away this time and then a dog trying to pee on our ice chest. We literally packed up our stuff and texted Matt we were leaving & asked about refund. 8:53am. About an hr later, he asked why we packed up because he just got a place for the dogs to go.
I told him a partial list of things that went wrong. I asked for a refund or how to go about the process. He refused.
The listing did say it is a farm. "we have horse, sheep, goats, chickens, cats and dogs. They are all very friendly and like to say hi." This is NO way says the animals all have free range and will be pooping and peeing in your campsite and you will constantly have to watch and make sure they are "scared off". Or that the goats don't eat your stuff.
He refused a refund, even after ADMITTING that the place was not ready for people. But he offered us two nights later "when they get it together". no way!!
Hipcamp is going to refund our money for the nights we didn't stay as well as give us credit for another adventure.
We had a really great camping experience. The view was spectacular and being able to climb in the hot tub with the mountains and the stars was amazing. Matt was super helpful with getting us situated. The property is super close to the town of Oakridge for any needs you may need. The surrounding area is also beautiful with lots of trails.
Beautiful and private!
This place is beautiful! The hot tub and TP, fire pit, and outhouse are all close together and you can park right on the site. Stared on a rough started since hip camp doubled booked the site but the hosts were very nice and rescheduled another day for us to visit! Would definitely recommend and would come back here!
