We traveled to Horse Persons Paradise from Pittsburgh and the drive was beautiful. Very quickly outside of the city the land became rolling and lush with green. It was a pretty easy 1.5 hour drive. Our GPS brought us right to the correct mailbox. Look for the antique green horse wagon by the turn of the driveway and you will know you are in the right place.
We drove into the gravel driveway and tucked our van into a small grassy lane near the spring that feeds from the pond. We found a level spot just the right size for our van and called it home. We never met the host, but the property felt peaceful and quiet. There is a pond with a small gazebo you can catch some shade in and a small paddle boat propped on the edge. We did not venture too far up the driveway beyond the pond - so we can’t speak to the rest of the property. If you are traveling near the town of Mechanicstown, Ohio check this place out!

Taking a little stroll.Sweet little stream not too far from here.A little paddleboat waiting for you at the pond. The pond with a small gazebo.

Absolutely beautiful and serene place to camp. We met John up the road from the campsite and he showed us the different spots where we could camp then brought us firewood. John and his friend Jeremy also explained where we could find various trails for hiking. We saw plenty of wildlife while we were there. A fox on the drive in, ducks, cardinals, blue jays, and a turkey on our way out. When we went on the paddle boat we saw plenty of fish and frogs in the water. The trails were lovely so hoping to get back there again soon.

Thank you John and Jeremy!

Upon arrival, John met us and showed us the way to another camping site, #10. We booked #12, but he was so gracious to offer us another site because it had more rain coverage. He helped us lug our stuff up there in his Grandma’s old tractor. The site was about a minute walk to and from our truck, not bad at all. The pond was beautiful. We said hi to his pet ducks on a few occasions. Our pup loved the constant deer sightings and was very confused of the howls at night. The trails are nicely kept (a total of 5 miles around his property) and kept us out of breath in a few sections. Totally had a blast and will definitely come again.

Thanks John!

This was one of the best camping trips we have ever taken. Our spot was nice and secluded and private and didn't hear or see anyone around us, which is so hard to find at a campground now a days. Tons of trails to hike, a pond to relax in or around, John was so accommodating and checked in on us to see if we ever needed anything. We even ended up loving it so much we stayed an extra night!! We couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Highly highly recommend!!

John was very responsive and friendly. He dropped off firewood at our site on the first night. Jeremy was friendly and accommodating. He told us about the trails and we had a nice walk in the woods with our dogs. Jeremy even gave us some freshly picked berries. We camped at site 7 on the pond. Other campers fished during the day and we had the pond all to ourselves from dusk until early morning. We’ll definitely be back soon!

We had a great time camping here. The site was private, and the property was beautiful. There are some nice hiking trails and a pond that you can swim or paddle boat in. Jeremy helped us out all weekend with firewood and checking on us once a day. We got to meet the donkey and horses that live there, they are very friendly. We will definitely be coming back.

Great camping experience! Upon arrival John was incredibly friendly and walked us to our campsite. After explaining the lay of the land John brought firewood to our campsite along with a trash bag and he made sure we had all of the items we needed (lighter, wine opener, etc).

Overall I much rather preferred this campsite to state run sites. This was SO much quieter, more private, and well maintained. There is no cellphone reception so I recommend downloading a map in your google maps beforehand. Also, do not use the map function from the Hipcamp app for directions (these are incorrect). Manually type the address into your gps. Cheers!
