As part of Ohio's famous Hocking Hills Region, Vinton County is home to the second largest state forest, in addition to multiple state parks and wildlife areas. You’ll encounter abandoned historical sites and relics dating back to the early 1800s, hidden away among the wooded hills of Ohio’s least populated county. If you're a lover of outdoor recreation, this is the place to be. Within about a half-hour drive, there are many opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, hunting and fishing, and birding. Nearby parks and forests include Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking Hills State Forest, Lake Hope State Park, Zaleski State Forest, the Moonville Rail Trail, Lake Alma State Park, Tar Hollow State Forest, and more!
Set up camp wherever you like! There are 12 acres of open field space, surrounded by 50 acres of wooded hills and hollows with hiking trails and level spots to pitch tents. Vehicles can be driven to the field sites; we are still working on a road to access the hill sites by vehicle. The fields have about a dozen "permanent" sites with stone or metal fire rings and log seating. Portable fire rings are also available that can be moved anywhere. Dead wood for campfires is free to gather, or split firewood is available to purchase for $5/bundle. A toilet and solar shower are located at the center of the property. An outdoor water spigot is also available. Guests are expected to follow the "Leave No Trace" principles. Any trash packed onto the property must be bagged and taken with you.

Camping at Hidden in the Hocking Hills was very peaceful. Caleb greeted us right when we arrived, had a map of the property and provided us with information on local activities. We were able to drive right up to where we pitched our tent. A fire ring had been left from the campers before, which came in handy for cooking hot dogs and s'mores later in the night. I would highly recommend camping at Hidden in the Hocking Hills.

I recommend this place. It was a little difficult to find. Once we got there, Caleb met us and showed us the map of his property and where the most favorite campsites have been. It was really quiet except for the occasional car passing by. Plus there was no one in site. Not a lot of wood to gather where we camped. So we bought some wood from a neighbor there. There was a nice little stream, but you have to hack your way through weeds and trees to get to it. Also where we camped there was a permanent fire pit.
This wasn't what we expected. The camp sites were wide open fields , with the road running in front, but we found a corner in the last field, with the river running behind us and it was wonderful!
The options for camping here are endless. Stay in the fields or hike up into the forest and look over the entire area. Hiked the logging trails, washed in the stream and built a fire circle. Thank you Caleb!!
Host was awesome, navigating and finding the best spot was a little tricky. Markers would have been very helpful!
This is a great place for the right person/group, but wasn't quite what we were hoping for.
PROS:
--Hosts were wonderfully responsive and laid back.
--Location is great for exploring the Hocking Hills region.
--LOTS of space for camping. NOT a noisy, cramped campground.
--Could accommodate a very large group indeed.
--Tons of flexibility on use of the space.
--Free tap water at the hosts' nearby house.
--Free wood if you're willing to cut/use old branches, downed trees, etc.
Things to be aware of (could be CONS for you):
--Not sure what the "bathe in stream" part of the listing is referring to. There's a small stream, but it is very shallow, full of silt, and we suspected had a lot of agricultural runoff.
--Although parts are forested, they can be very difficult to access during the summer because of the very dense undergrowth.
--The mowed strip around the field is fine for a high-profile SUV, but not a good fit for a standard-profile car. In wet weather, I would worry about getting out of there without a higher-profile 4WD vehicle.
The reason this didn't quite work for us is that we were looking for a bit of a "unicorn," camping-wise, in which my sons could build a crude shelter while I set up a tent nearby for my use and backup for them. We thought this place would work well -- and indeed the hosts would have been totally fine with that -- but forest areas near the fields were impassibly dense.

It's very quiet out there and almost no people when we went. Small stream worked perfect to keep my daughter occupied while I set up camp. Fire wood is free if you are okay with hiking around to find it. I would definitely camp here again.
Our stay at the Altenbrauch Farm was more than pleasing! With not really knowing what to expect exactly, upon our arrival we were set at ease with the host and the beautiful land surrounding. The area was very open, taken care of, and inviting. Plus, Caleb had a packet of activities close to the site which were more than handy at the time! Would definitely check it out if you're looking for a quiet and freeing campsite.
Perfect for days filled with hiking
This was a great find in the middle of all the areas I wanted to explore.
Caleb met me right away with a map of the property and information on the area. He communicated great and I also had total privacy.
Fireflies and cell coverage (with Verizon) in an otherwise dead zone.
Good experience!
