We are easily one of the closest, and cheapest, camping options when it comes to staying in Asheville. Only 8-12 minutes by car from downtown Asheville, we are a high-quality, budget option when staying in the area. The camping area is located in a small, private, green valley, and you will definitely feel like you are "out in the sticks" even though you're actually super close to all the breweries and parks that make Asheville what it is.
If you happen to be interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we own and operate a gym on the premises. You'd be able to attend all classes free of charge during your stay!
Our location has about 2 acres of wooded area, with plenty of good spots for a tent. We ask that you only have one tent per site. We're constantly working on the area, which lies in a valley, to try and improve the space, including building small structures for future camping spots. There are a lot of trees and scrub brush, so privacy shouldn't be an issue.
Amenities: Communal fire pit, picnic tables, sink with cold running water, outhouse, outdoor solar shower, hangout spots
Full disclosure: there is a farm directly up the hill from us that can occasionally waft unpleasant animal smells (usually when they clean out their pens). No matter how often we tell them, the animals refuse to respect our quiet hours, so you might hear them at night. There is sometimes some noisy traffic in the neighborhood during the day.
**Between NOVEMBER and MARCH, we can NOT GUARANTEE ACCESS TO WATER due to winter weather. While we still allow winter reservations, please be aware that conditions are on the more primitive side of "primitive camping."**

The Baying Hound is only a short 4.2 miles from Downtown Asheville. The drive will take you from city center to countryside in only 10 minutes. Once you turn onto Gormon Bridge Road you will see the mural covered Jiu jitsu studio directly at the road. Taking the far left road, you will see orange arrow shaped markers on the right hand side of the road letting you know you are going in the right direction. There are several places to park your vehicle on the grass and if you are camping in your van, you will park here. If you are tent camping, follow the path once you park (you will see more orange arrows) down to a lower area where you will find a couple of outlined tent camping spots. The hosts are very friendly and are open to you finding any spot that suits your fancy, outside of what they have laid out. The tent areas you will see are clearly outlined with wooden borders and are flat. They also intentionally left brush to grow wild for privacy between camp spots. They are repurposing tires that were dumped on the property when they bought it by building rammed tire steps to the outhouse as well as another set of steps to a sitting area where they will hang a hammock under the shelter of a truck camper shell. They have lots of ideas to put into action with camper shells, one of which is to have covered areas to camp under.
You can fill your water by a spigot by the hosts house and there’s a super cool Pot o’ Gold (literally) composting toilet on the side of the hill. A small raised fire pit is there for guests to use, as well. You are in the country so you may hear a few guns being fired, but this area felt safe and your hosts are very eager for you to come and enjoy yourself!
The description and photos of the Baying Hound accurately represented the experience that we had during our long weekend stay. The host gave helpful information and quick responses online that allowed us to settle in to our stay without any fuss. The whole experience was very autonomous from check in to check out. The location to Asheville was convenient, the neighborhood seemed safe and the host description lets you know in advance that there may be some sound and smell concerns (camp is near a road and near a farm) but they were minor and not a bother. As always with camping, come prepared with everything you need (perhaps some bug spray and ear plugs) and you will have a great time!
Perfect for breweries and hiking
Perfect spot to set up camp for the weekend. We wanted to do a mixture of hikes in the area and also explore the breweries and shows downtown and this was the perfect location to do that. The campsite is basic, but it's all you need when you plan to spend most of the time outdoors. Very social place and easy to meet other campers as you share the fire pit and grill in the evenings. Rarely saw the hosts but when we did they were very friendly and welcoming. Would stay here again!
Cute little campground to stay at, it really captures the essence of "Keep Asheville Weird". A very short drive to town which is very convenient. Definitely will stay here again sometime!
Little taste of asheville
The baying hound was such a unique place to stay! All the campsites are cozily nestled at the bottom of a small hill. The artwork is beautiful and it’s such a friendly environment. I can’t wait to stay here again sometime!
Great campground with friendly hosts. Definitely a unique place. Not much to do at the camground but if you're just looking for a place to relax and sleep at night this is the spot.
Cute location but a bit noisy
Cute strip of campsites with a great location. The owners have added a lot of fun details and character. A bit noisy and smelly as mentioned in the description. Unfortunately, we had inconsiderate camping neighbors who didn't abide by the quiet time rule so our stay was not very pleasant.
Cute spot! If prepared for no toilet or shower will exceed expectations. Well maintained. Very conveniently located. Bring bug spray and except animal sounds (dogs, chickens, goats, etc). Liked it very much.
