Places to see near Old Mountain Home & Forest
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Hidden gem on top of the world
Our stay at Old Mountain Home & Forest was an absolute pleasure. Oenita's 77 acre property sits on the top of a mountain with a 360-degree view of the Great Smoky Mountains. No matter where you pitch your tent, you are guaranteed a magical view at sunrise or sunset. To make this location even more memorable, Oenita (the host) gave us the best type of southern comfort making us feel right at home.
Camping here was something magical. The view from the site is like no other! Beautiful sunrises, sunsets, and stargazing. You feel so connect to nature. Oenita is very friendly, helpful, and has some great stories to tell if you get the chance to listen. Definitely will be coming back to camp here in the future!
Beyond words amazing
This campsite was better than I could have ever expected it to me. Not only was our campground one of the most amazing views I have ever seen, but our host was the kindest woman I have ever met. This is such a welcoming environment with amazing views, animals and activities to do. My friend and I that went got the chance to fish, hike and take in amazing mountain top views in what felt like any outdoor lovers playground. On top of that we were able to interact with all the sweet animals on the property. If you get the change you need to go here, you won’t regret it!
Beautiful moutain view tent camping
Oenita has a beautiful property that we are so thankful we found! The site they call "The Pretty Spot" is in the middle of the meadow with an amazing view, but no shade. We opted to stay to the left on the property line that was perfectly shady/sunny mix with an amazing view of the mountains. As stated, is it primitive and it's on the side of a mountain so finding flats spots presented its challenges so I suggest bringing a mini shovel so you can safely have a campfire. Oenita (plus Tim, Elijah, and Lynn!) were the sweetest and such a pleasure to be around. Our only small issue was on day we were leaving...it took us 1 1/2 hours to find someone to take the UTV to our site so we could leave, which could have easily been rectified if we had set up a specific time for them to come get us. Other then that Oenita was very tentative to the texts and calls when we needed assistance (the sites on up a very steep gravel/dirt road, I'm sure some vehicles have the capacity to make it, ours did not so we were dependent on them getting us back up to the site when we came back with groceries or ice. I did the walk up with 2 gallons of water but I don't think I'd could have done much more. lol) Her beautiful property includes a hike to the top of the ridge line...it was challenging but so fun! Took us an hour to reach the top doing a little over a mile up. Thank you for your hospitality, we can't wait to return!
Gorgeous views and generous host
Oenita is a warm, hospitable, flexible, and generous host. We enjoyed her property and the campsite very much. The views are BREATHTAKINGLY STUNNING, especially at sunset. There are horses, goats, donkeys, and fishing ponds on the property as well.
A few things to note:
* Bring a camping canopy to provide shade during the day. There were no trees by our site, which made for enormous starry skies, but we were grateful to have our canopy during the day.
* I highly recommend having a four wheel drive SUV or truck with high ground clearance. They were very willing to drive us to our campsite as many times as it took to get our gear there, but we realized that we wanted our vehicle close by to store food. Our mid-sized SUV managed it, but there is no way a car or a van would have made it.
* Our campsite was in a horse pasture, so we had horse visitors every night once the sun went down and they stayed well after we went to bed. So expect to be shooing away horses from your dinner or listening to horses munching right next to your tent at 3:00 AM.
* That said, I was grateful that the horses were close by around 5 AM when we woke up to hear a bear walking through our campsite (remember - keep your food in your car!!!). Though I was more than a bit nervous to hear the bear, I could hear the horses close by, had the panic button on our key fob at the ready, and the bear moved on within a couple of minutes without any interaction with us or damage to our campsite. I say all of this not to disparage the property. The campsite is great. Camping in the mountains carries the risk of bears, no matter where you are.
