At Gateway to the Smokies we have over an acre of land with only 2 private campsites to choose from.
Site # 1 is our Creekside Campsite. This site is a walk-in site for TENTS ONLY. To reach this site, you'll cross the bridge to enter our property then park in the parking area to the right of the driveway near the shared portable toilet. This parking area can accommodate two vehicles. From there you'll walk in about 75 feet to the campsite on the opposite side of the driveway. This site is a grassy area that sits right along Camp Creek which flows year round. There is a 16' tent pad at the very back of the meadow under the large maple and black walnut trees for the most shade. A small fire ring is there for campfires as well as a picnic table and a hammock stand. You can bring your own hammock to attach to the stand or rent ours as an extra when booking. One thing to consider before booking this site, there is a 3-4 foot steep drop off just beyond the the tent pad and the creek itself. For this this reason site #1 may not be suitable for small children.
Site # 2 is our Hilltop Campsite. It is considered a Dry Camping / No Hookups site. This site can accommodate self-contained, smaller sized motor homes, camper vans, truck campers as well as travel trailers up to 20 ft in length. It is also available to tent campers as well. This site is a large flat grassy area with trees all around the perimeter providing some shade at different times of the day. It also has a picnic table and a brick fire pit. No class A or 5th wheels are allowed. This Is due to the steepness and curvature of the road. Four wheel drive or AWD is highly recommended to reach the hilltop site. Two wheel drive can make it when the ground is dry however this area is considered a temperate rain forest.
To reach the Hilltop Campsite, cross the bridge over the creek and follow the road until you get to the top of the hill. When you've reached the level lot this is your camping area. You will have plenty of room to turn your rig around without having to back up. For this reason we have it listed as a pull through site. The shared portable toilet can be reached from this site via a short trail back down the hill.
Directly across the highway from the property is a Dollar General (aka “The camp store”) as well as a Beer and Wine store. There is also a gas station close by on the same side of the highway that you could walk to. Behind the property is several acres of natural forest and on the other side beyond the trees is pasture land.
Gateway to the Smokies is a short 10 minute drive to Bryson City, Sylva and the North Carolina entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cherokee is only 4 miles away and has museums, a grocery store, restaurants and of course Harrah's Cherokee Casino. Sequoyah National Golf Club is less than a half mile away.

Well kept and convenient spot
Located just 15 minutes outside of the national park from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, this camping spot is the perfect base camp for our visit. Camp spot 1 by the creek has a newly added tent pad, hammock, picnic table, and firepit. The two camping spots are totally separate and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We had an amazing view of the stars at night and wish there were more days in our visit. Overall the site was spotless and the area was obviously well kept in general.
While it is located just off a main road, there is limited traffic overnight and with the sound of nature and the water flowing by, we were asleep in no time at all.
Michael was very responsive to our last minute booking and provided helpful information to our general questions about the area. We would definitely stay again.
One thing to note is when you arrive, it might seem like you are pulling into the neighboring storage facility as the driveway to the campsite is not paved.
Perfectly accessible basecamp!
Hi Michael- thank you so much for having us at your property. It is perfectly situated for all of the activities we did and we'll be back for more! We went into Cherokee, got on the Blue Ridge Parkway quickly, went into the Smokies for some more hiking, and saw a movie at the Cherokee movie theater. I love how it is perfectly located for more trips into Bryson City or Maggie Valley, which are on our to do list next time. Even the nighttime skies were stunning. We'll be back real soon! Thank you!
Can’t wait to go back!
Beautiful camping spot in a convenient location! Completely private at the top of the hill. We were able to explore the close by trails and attractions all day and then enjoy a beautiful sunset view from the campsite in the evening. The large, open grassy area was perfect for star gazing.
The creek area was beautiful. If we had stayed longer I would have loved to spend some time lounging down there.
The site is off a main road in the area. We loved the convenience of it. With that being said.... there is some traffic noise. I only mention this because of another review I had read. The traffic quiets down in the evening and was not a bother to us at all. We loved that the site was so private, yet so close to everything.
We had a little rain storm during our stay. The campsite itself drained well. The drive down the hill was a little muddy and slippery the next morning. It wasn’t a big problem for our 25 ft class c. If we had been pulling a trailer type camper, it would have been a little scary. In dry weather, this would be a non issue.
Overall we loved our stay here. Can’t wait to visit again.
Very peaceful campsite
I was able to book the creekside campsite at the last minute. Michael the host sent me a message almost immediately thanking me for the booking and was very nice. The directions given from the app led me right to the campsite. I parked my car in the designated spot next to the porta potty which was very clean and had hand sanitizer it. It was a very short walk to where I pitched my tent. The Creekside area was grassy and freshly mowed and there was plenty of shade from very mature trees towards the back of the meadow. The creek that flows through was very clean and clear and the sounds of the water put me right to sleep rather quickly. I guess I was exhausted from all the hiking I did in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which was just a few short miles away. The campsite had a fire ring but I was too tired to even make a fire. I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping and the gentle flowing creek. I laid in my tent til almost noon when I heard the other camper from the other site leaving. I wish I had more time and I would have stayed another night. Cant wait to come back!
Convenient location, close to Cherokee, casino and the Smokies. Sylva is pretty close too and has four or five breweries, Lazy Hiker and Innovative are nice. Site was very clean and private. Booked kinda late in the day but the host Michael was very nice and responded very quickly. I would definitely recommend this camp site and would enjoy staying here again.
Private site close to the smokeys!
The site was wonderful. It was very close to the entrance of the smokey national park. The host was very communicative and suggested hikes and things to see in the area. The space was great with a clean and new picnic table, fire pit and plenty of space.
Private and convenient
I had the little campground to myself. Lots of privacy. Convenient and easy to find. Right on the highway, close to gas station, dollar general etc. Traffic noise was somewhat loud but didn’t bother me much. After a lot of hiking you’re too tired to be awakened by traffic noise.
Mr. Michael Gutierrez is a super host. Replies to your messages right away explaining everything in detail. So the need to meet him did not arise although he was readily available. Portable toilet was clean and equipped with plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. It was a little too tilted for me though. Being an older man it was taking a little effort to get up off the commode and also keep my balance. I’m sure Michael will level it soon and before I revisit his place.
Thanks again for everything Mr. Michael.
